  1. I have a few NTSC AVI's which I want to convert to DVD (in the UK). My player will play NTSC or PAL but I was wondering if the quality would be any different between leaving it as NTSC or changing it to PAL before or during the AVI to DVD conversion. I am using DVD2SVCD which is great

  2. I use the same,
I wouldn't bother, if your player plays both - there's no difference in quality, just sreen size and framerate.

make sure you set anamorphic when selecting res.

  3. Thanks for the answer, I was hoping that was the case, but what is anamorphic and where do I set it

  4. I wonder if your source is 23.97FPS then by converting it to 25FPS instead of 29.97FPS wouldn`t that give you a higher bit rate video and fewer dropped frames.

You are likely to get a worse result. You will have to change the framerate, which often gives stilted results, and you will have to resize up, which will soften the image. I have a lot of NTSC stuff, and never bother to change it. It's just not worth the effort.

    - I do agree with this statement. If you player is able to play both NTSC and PAL, why converting? Please remember that PAL (if I'm not mistaken) is at 25fps and NTSC 29.97. There's a difference. Just a curiosity: UK may use PAL. Well in Brazil we've got officially PAL-M which is PAL at 30 fps (PAL quality with that NTSC touch) - no need to say all DVD industry (discs and players) is NTSC here.

Most NTSC movies are 23.976 with pulldown for playback at 29.976. Converting to PAL at 25fps isn't so bad. But again, while degrade what you have if you don't need to ? Many (most ?) PAL players can also output PAL60, which is PAL at 60fps, or two frames for every NTSC frame. Most PAL TVs will accept this if they wont take NTSC native.
