Is it possible to convert a mpeg1 or .avi to VCD format and then burn it onto DVD media so I can watch it on my stand alone DVD player.
Basically I'm after speed here. I download, I convert and burn to DVD in the shortest time possible, then I watch on stand alone. Not bothered about chapters and all that but wouldn't like to loose quality.
I use TMPGEnc usually.

I use Mainconcept. You can even pick low-res DVD from their menu, and author it directly to half-d1 (MPG2, 352x480) or even quarter-d1 (MPG1, 352x240, but DVD audio).
You COULD see if your player supports VCD-DVD's, but that's a bit esoteric. The program to fiddle with for that would be SVCD2DVDMPG+, or whatever it's called now. I worked with the author for a while, and it's a rockin' little program IF you have one of the 50% of players that will take (s)vcd-DVD's. -
It's possible using TMPGEnc. Do a guide search for conversion VCD to DVD.

If you're looking for speed just buy a DVD player that can play MPEG and AVI (Divx/Xvid) files off ISO disks. Then you won't have to convert formats. Download, burn to DVD as data files, play.

i just ran my .avi's through TMPGEnc and converted them to VCD .mpg's
then I dropped them into TMPGEnc DVD Author and it did all the work
you can fit about 28 'half-hour' (20 min) episodes on a DVD this way"To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright
