I'm thinking about an upgrade to my motherboard and processor.
Please check my specs (to keep this post short). I'm only looking for products made by Intel. I would like the fastest processor and a matched mobo, and use my current memory.
    Any help?
    Thanks...........

why pay to upgrade when you can spen $50 on a nice heatsink and overclock?

  3. Why stick to Intel, when you can get AMD for half the price, go to 64 bit, and have money left over?

Bah, enough of the A64 is the future of computing, it's getting silly. They've been out for almost two years and no 64-bit native Windows OS or software has been created to take advantage. Brilliant marketing move on AMDs part though. Don't forget the new P4s have EM64T on them. Only problem with the current line of Pentiums is the thermal issues...

I'm assuming your board is 478? You don't have too many upgrade options there. I think the fastest 478 chips are 3.4EE Prescotts. Depending on the type of work you're doing with it the upgrade won't be terribly noticeable, especially considering the cost. The big caches on the EE chips is apparently very helpful when using CAD and DCC apps though.

  6. Let's not forget that A64 chips are generally faster at 32-bit computing than comparable P4 Prescotts as well...

It has been created. But SOMEHOW its release cycle ends up almost matched with the Intel cpu that uses the same instructions. Imagine that.

M$ would cripple itself if it released a 64-bit OS before both the big chip manufacturers had mainstream 64-bit procs. If they were to release XP 64 (or whatever they'll name it) before that and the Intel chips later have problems with the OS then it would immensely hurt both companies' business. Yes, it would greatly increase AMDs business but I think I'd like at least two CPU manufacturers on the market competing against each other than just one single one raping us on processor prices.

  9. But MS also realizes that many people are already running XP 64's, and want to get a jump on the OS.
It's been out in Beta for a while now, and consumer testing is happening.
Yes, it may not be "full release" until Intel puts out a 64 bit CPU, but MS isn't just waiting around either.

If I had the cash, I'd spring for the 1kpin chip and an Asus to put it on.

If you would like the fastest processor, then it isn't Intel. The fastest procesor is the Athlon64 FX-55.

No way its the Wintermine core P4 EXDXFX2 that runs at 5ghz and needs a heatsink the size of your room. Intel ALWAYS wins.

On that note a friend built a P4 3.2 or 3.4 or something recently for his work machine even after I suggested an AMD. He now wishes he had gone with the AMD.

If the man wants a Intel though no reason to try and stop him, even if its not the best price/performance ratio.

True. its your decision which you opt for. I do recommend the Ahtlon64. However, be careful of the Prescott (Intel) chips as they have a problem with over heating.

  13. I assume you want to use your video card as well. Since you didn't specify a budget:

    MB- DFI Lanparty 875P(775t) $ 173
    CPU - P4 660(3.6g/2MB) $615 or
    570J(3.8g/1MB) $653

Or as suggested, you could spend about $50-70 on a Thermalright XP-120 and fan and OC. You will get darn close to the performance. If the XP-120 doesn't fit your MB, the XP-90 is almost as good and will fit most MBs.

edit: thought i would add this. intel is NOT the biggest and baddest STILL. its still back and forth. but then again that 3.73 is intel's newest so how can you compare it to the fx-55? well you can because they compare pretty closely in the performance area of things. i'd say a fair comparison would be to amd's new chip, the fx-57 that comes out next month. new vs new. then we can really talk

I haven't seen any benches on the new 1066 FSB Prescotts. I wonder if I can get my Noconas to 1066...
