Dvd recorder with Commercial Advance?

Are there any? Why can't this useful feature be put into Panasonic, Pioneer, etc, dvd recorders? It was great on VCRs.

all that was on vcr was version of fastforward in increasements of 2 minutes's..

you would have to have something like replay tv.

Skipping a minute forward—CM Skip

Play restarts from approximately a minute later. Convenient when

Press [CM SKIP]

Commercial skip and commercial advance are 2 different things. Commercial skip goes forward in preset increments, commercial advance goes back after recording and sets index marks at the beginning and end of the commercials, so when turned on during playback it will automatically FF through the commercials.

Sorry then.... how did it knew that there is an commercial ? Are you saying that after (let's say) 2h of recording VCR reviewed back to begining and than it went through 2h and set marks on the beginning and the end of each commercial ?

The simple reason is that Commercial Advance (or commercial skipping feature) is considered to be a copyright infringement and Replay TV was sued by the TV networks for adding that feature on their DVR product. Before the lawsuit is settled, no other manufacturers of DVD recorders would dare to add it to their products. As for VCRs, since they were cleared for any copyright violations in the Betamax case, so they are free to add that feature without any legal problem.

samijubal has it right. It's correctly written 'Commercial Advance' cause it's copyright I think..... It was a real thing too. Some guy programmed a chip to do it & it found it's way into VCRs. You would turn it on, it would record your program then after thats done, it would mark commercials, then when you played it back it would FF through them about 70% of the time. Sometimes it would keep going & sometimes it didn't know there was a commercial.

I thought the Replay suit was about the fact that you could record without having the commercials kept on the hd. So, they changed it so that the commercials were still on the hd.

Best I have at the moment is a Panasonic, I push 'time slip' then 3 minutes & enter. Its pretty fast would be better if it were automatic.

By marking the beginnings and ends of commercials and skipping these commercials, you are effectively hiding the commercials and therefore altering the content of TV programs, at least that's the Networks' argument. Remember that Philips' DVD+VR mode uses the same principle of editing on DVD+RW media.

It basically searches for black screens and changes of audio level and other cues of possible commercial breaks, therefore it is not 100% correct in marking commercials, especially if the program has frequent black screen transition moment.

In EU we have VPS (Video Programme System)/PDC (Programme Delivery Control) which is implemented on DVD Recorders too. It is good for exact recordings... it starts end ends recordnig at exact point even when time was changed.... and I believe (not 100% sure) that this also makes recording to stop on the beggining of commercial and restart at the end. I haven't use it some time so I am not sure... of course... TV station has to send that signal.

Interesting... they say that broadcasters don't use "commercial break" function, but back in my mind.... I remeber seeing it about 7 years ago on one recording... or was it just some unexpected interuption of program ??? Hmmm....

The new Panasonic DMR-ES10 has a "CM Skip" button on the remote which advances the playback at approximately 1-minute intervals. I would personally prefer 30-second intervals, as that is the length of a standard commercial.
