Knowing that the vast majority of people cannot play these vids on anything other than their home computers, why are people converting to this? Do they not know (or not care)? Just want to use the latest and newest everything (I DLed a vid today and it is QPEL and GMC as well as using a new version of the Xvid codec that I had to DL before being able to play the clip...argh!) Are they using tools where this is the default and are unaware? I'm very careful if someone requests something in Xvid that parameters that would affect playback unduly are registered. I'm also not going to force you to download anything else in order to be able to play the clip. Downright nasty I say...

It's all about file size. I have a 250GB hard disc with over 300 movies backed up on it. I use Fair Use Wizard to convert the movies to XVID. The file size on each movie is set to 700MB. The resolution is quite acceptable. I use the Pinnacle Show Center to allow me to watch the movies on my TV. With the ease of a push button remote, I can watch any of these movies. Whether or not I can burn these XVID files onto a disc and play them on a DVD player is not an issue for me.

Seeing the popularity of cheap players like the Philips 642 over Home Theatre PCs, I'd imagine for uploaders that they would want their work out to the largest group possible. At least, that's my reasoning. The vid clips I DL are of TV shows whose file size is under 350 Meg per clip. The cost of the discs is no longer an issue when quality DVD blanks like Maxell can be had for roughly 50 cents per disc, which is why I do most of my own stuff on DVD these days. CD-Rs cost more than that! I have 4 HDDs in my system that are loaded with video project files as well as 25 DVD-RAM and 30 DVD-RWs also awaiting transfer. Conversion to DivX or Xvid is not an option as it's too time consuming for my PIII...

  4. Downloaded video is always suspect. There are too many amateurs encoding crap, from crap, with the wrong tools and the wrong settings, thinking they're so smart that they pirated something and are sharing their "expertise" with the whole internet.
Not one of them has ever tried to make a DVD, let alone a DVD from one of their own encodes.
Most of these types should be shot.

Video enthusiastsdo something because it is possible, not because they need it that way, or even care about it

I have a friend that collects (buy that is) many - and I mean MANY - DVDs everyday. He don't even watch them! Just buy them... Where is the logic behind this? He failed to explain it to me...

I'm sure some people simply encode with qpel/GMC because they want to enable everything. Others because they know what they are doing and qpel/GMC help the encode. qpel and GMC are part of ASP so no real reason not to use them, just a pitty that the hardware manufactures can't follow the standards, otherwise there wouldn't be an issue.

Hold on a mo...YOUR input is ZERO...and...what YOU want is video that YOU can USE from OTHER people...in a format YOU can cope with? That good old english phrase springs to mind.. 'you FUCKIN hypocrite'.

You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning.

    Tone it down please.

I don't understand what you mean that my "input" is zero. If you mean do I UL stuff myself, well that might be a breach of rules but let me say that I haven't been shy about the stuff I have getting into the hands of the masses...in a format anyone can use. I'm not out to use the latest and greatest, codecs that are obscure or anything else that detracts from anyone who wants my work. However, a lot of people that I have to deal with everyday, want my stuff to their own specs, which (for the most part) would make the clips unplayable on most homeDVD players and computer systems. Why they want to do this is beyond me...

It's not just home computers. Most business travellers these days carry laptops and road warriors tend to carry single spindle machines due to their light weight. XVID/DIVX converted movies take up less than a gig of disk space each. Before taking a cross crountry trip I can load 6 XVIDS in my single spindle laptop and be set for viewing on both my outgoing and return flights (USAir Airbus A32X planes have power at each seat). For several years I bought VCD's from Malaysia since they could easily be ripped to a hard drive and played fine under Windows NT, but the quality of an XVID conversion is so good that I would never buy another VCD and would not compromise weight considerations to get a laptop with a built-in DVD drive.

Xvid itself isn't the question...for me, it's QPEL/GMC that's a problem. I'm uncertain of how many people on this board have laptops (I don't) or even the people that want my stuff but I think the laptop users are a minority. What I'm pissed about is the people that upload something and don't tell you how the clip was made in an nfo (or don't know...complete lack of experience) or else want you to DL some arcane piece of software so you can watch their stuff. I now avoid any DLs that don't tell you how the clip was made and I ignore requests for people who want me to use the same oddball formating to THEIR specs. Hey, take the straight SVCD Mpeg and convert it yourself I say...
