i have a hard drive that is partion as C:\ and D:\. C is my default drive for the windows installation and D is the My Documents folder. The hard drive got messed up after a power outage. When i start my PC there is a message says that "...WINDOS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG..." is missing or corrupt. I got a new hard drive that i installed WinXP to and connected my old hard drive as slave. With XP running on the new hard drive i access to both partions of my old hard drive.
The thing is that when i try to open My Music or My Pictures there is a message saying that access is denied.
Question: how do i stop this or go around it without reformatting my old drive.
    Please help.

Is the error message just "Access is denied", or does it give you a couple more sentences after that which explain WHY access is denied ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

There is a refernce in the M$ knowledge base about this. Basically, your new account has a different ID to your old account, and this is where the permissions have got screwed up. There is a way to take ownership of the old folders so you can access them.

Try this one to start with

or this for a variation on a theme

You could just get something like knoppix, it's a OS you burn to CD. Pop it in and restart your comp. Copy the files whereever you want. Reboot to windows and wallah..... It's a pretty big download, I keep a copy around for just such occasions.
