I'm trying to install WinXP SP2 but get the error "can't backup atapi.sys file"
MS say it's because I have Alcohol 120% installed. I (eventually)uninstalled Alco120 but still get this problem. I'm not using Daemon.
If I try and copy/paste the file it says "it's in use by another program" but I am able to use the cut/paste function which creates a copy and leaves the original in the system32/drivers folder.
I realise I can by-pass the error but like to get it sorted out properly.

Could I keep the copy I manually made and have that for backup purposes should SP2 rollback be required ?

Anyways, What else could be locking the atapi.sys file ?
    CloneCD, Shrink, Decrypter ??????

Is there anyway to find out what is using the atapi file ?

    Thanks

are you trying to install it overtop from within windows? if so try it fresh by booting off cdrom then installing.. or if you must try to install it in safe mode. if none of those ideas are something you can or want to try.. only other option i can think of is to goto start/run/msconfig and under startup tab uncheck ALL pgms and reboot.. you should then be able to install it from within windows.

I'm using the SP2 CD for the install.
I've tried MSconfig and even Safe Mode and deleted any left over Alco reg entries.

I can actually make my own copy of the atapi file using the cut/paste function. Somehow it replaces the file after I've "cut" it from the drivers folder.
Perhaps I could place my copy in the location that SP2 places the backup copies of the other files it backs up or just burn a copy incase I need to roll back SP2.
Another concern is than when SP2 tries to replace atapi later during the install it might say it can't replace the file with the new version as "it's in use".

    So frustrating !

I've ran all sorts of scans for viruses and spyware and I'm clean so far. I've back my HD with Norton Ghost because I'm about to try and update to SP2 once more. Last time that I updated to SP2, I was unable to connect to the internet. I got some kind of error stating that I had little or no connection or something.

Is there anything helpful that I must know and perform before I proceed with the SP2 update?

    Fixed it.
I downloaded a program from http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml and this let me find what was using atapi.sys and cancel the use of it.
After that SP2 went on just fine.
