  1. I need DVD+. They play in all my other machines. Will not use tuner, only composite/S video in if available.
I was debating between the LiteOn 5005 at Costco for $159 or the iLo R40 at Wally's for $140. Any difference between these two machines?? Is this a draw match?
And now I read the Panasonic ES10 that was just released burns +R for the first time and is $200. I'm willing to part with a few extra bucks if the Panny is clearly superior. But I would like to save a few $$ where possible.
I have Tivo's everywhere and will only use the recorder for occasional Tivo cleaning, 8mm tape dubs and some old VHS dubs. Plus, it will be the main playback unit for this setup, but not the main home theater movie player. But PQ is still high on my list.
Keeping it simple, it's go with the Panny or no...flat out. An if no, which of the bargain units?

A few weeks ago, CompUSA had the LVW5005 for $99.00 (after rebate). So that's the price to beat

  3. Rushed to Compusa online to check for the heck of it, and they want $289 for it, so I'm not sure what they are smoking asking that much.

I have both the lvw5005 and the ilo dvdr04 so you can ask me any questions if you want. But of those two, I would definately buy the 5005, especially for only 20 bucks more than the ilo. I'll post some facts on both units

Facts for Ilo and liteon 5005
    1. records to dvd+r\rw
    2. records in 256k mpeg audio
    3. has 4 recording modes built in
    4. easy to use easy guider
    5. s-video input on back, composite video input on front
    6. mono tuner
    7. plays jpeg, mp3, svcd,vcd, audio cd
    8. both are hackable to record from any source, including protected content, and hack to add additional recording mode the 3 hour LP mode.
    9. high recordable disc compatability (I have never had a coaster, or any problems while recording)

advantages of the 5005 over ilo
    1. records to dvd-r/rw, vcd, svcd, and audio cds as well as dvd+r/rw

    disadvantes of both units
    1. occasional jitter in recordings
    2. some complain of green tint, neither of my units suffer from this
    3. front inputs suffer from bad design, both leave humming noise in background of recordings. Rear inputs are not affected.

I'd suggest downloading the manuals, at www.ilohelp.com and www.liteonit.com

  8. The ES-10 was at Circuit City for $189.99 last week. It does not have a DV input however. It does record to dvd-ram, dvd-r, dvd-rw, and dvd+r but not dvd+rw.

"Needing" DVD+R puts a limit on you that is keeping you away from better units. My thoughts. If DVD+R works, DVD-R should work too.

  10. I can try an -R on my machines. I found that when I started all this DVD recording mess, recording to DVD+R om Memorex brand disks worked on everything I had. I think DVD-R (again with a Memorex blank) did not work on my daughters Toshiba SPD-2000. This test was some time ago and I can redo it.
If -R does work, what's your "hot list"?
    Thanks.

The "best" DVD-R media includes the Maxell DVD-R packs that say MADE IN JAPAN (most say this) as well as the Taiyo Yuden brand. Taiyo Yuden can be found in FUJI packs that say MADE IN JAPAN (though they can sometimes be hard to find).

Most people just go with the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs you can buy direct from RIMA.COM because you know what you are getting everytime you order. Only problem here is that you must order a minimum of 50 discs so you might want to look for 10 packs of FUJI or Maxell that say MADE IN JAPAN. These can be found in retail stores such as BEST BUY (best place to find the FUJI packs) or Staples and Office Depot (for the Maxell packs).

Well, that's your problem. Bad media. Not media type. Memorex = CMC = junk, most likely.

Look at JVC and Pioneer recorders. Excellent.
