Sorry to ask such a basic question, but where can I get a firewire driver? I am running Windows ME on my PC, have a firewire PCI card from Intex, and am trying to connect a Sony DCR TRV33E using Ulead Video Studio. It seems that I need a driver, but I don't have one. Should that have been included on the Video Studio installation CD, part of Windows ME, or what? Any help would be much appreciated.

FW should have driver autoloaded by Windows (no separate driver, your Sony doesn't need a driver either). This is all done by your OS. Check device manager for IEEE devices, remove and reboot to reinstall if needed. Check your FW cable, this is by far most common FW failure cause.

Thanks proxyx99, but having deleted the IEEE device, I now have a problem with the PC trying to update the hardware information database. I get the message that it is not responding, and have to cancel that program. Any thoughts?

Get rid of ME and upgrade to 2000 or XP and the problems will go away

Some newer cards are XP only. Was the IEEE-1394 card XP only or did it include a Windows ME specific driver disk ?
It won't work on ME unless it says ME/98 is supported. -
Windows ME you are using has properly loaded the driver initially yet the device was not functioning properly. Device removal in order to reinstall the driver is a standard procedure and should not result in any OS issues. Boot into Safe Mode and then Normal mode again. You may remove safely any devcce from the Manager (except for plug and play BIOS entry, this may at times make hardware auto-setup more flakey). The problem you are facing is that most likely one of your other devices is not installed properly not allowing Windows to assign its resources properly. You may also remove other devices that you suspect or remove FW card, full reboot (boot into Windows without the card) and reinsert it into another slot on the next boot cycle. THat should be enough. Assuming that your Windows is unstable you may try running Windows ME setup (from the existing Windows session) in order to reinstall Windows "on top of itself". It preserves current environment and usually fixes all plug'n'play issues.
