  1. When using TMPGEnc to convert to AVI, I try to use mp3 audio. But, my options are limited. The highest bitrate it allows me is 56k/s, and the highest sample rate is 24k. why?

is there any way to fix this?

I do have lame installed, and it lets me use mp3 for MPEG-1/2, but not for avi!

Your choice of application for creating AVI is somewhat out of the main stream. VirtualDub should be a better option.

  3. Another problem with using VDub.
The "movies" i would like to convert are split. Soo they are 2 *.vob files each. I tried to combine the two VOBs using VideoReDo, but the audio was off-sync

VOBs are just parts of a video-DVD taken out of it's context, not something you should use for anything. Use ReJig to demux video and audio out of the VOBs (you can select multiple VOBs and demux them as one) if you want some source material for further conversions/edits.

  5. ok now i used ReJig to demux the VOBs into one .m2v file and a .wav
VDub still only gives me the option of 56kb/s max for mp3... why?

Probably a screwed codec installation. You have the lame dll installed correctly?

You need: LameACM.acm, lameACM.inf and lame_acm.xml. It's included in the latest LAME package found probably here (look under tools), and at doom9 for sure.
Place the 3 files indicated above in a directory, right-click the .inf file ans select Install. Done.
Fire up VirtualDub, and you'll see Lame MP3 as a compression option, with up to 320 kbps CBR available.
