  1. I've been using the clam shell style cases for my DVD+-Rs since they take up the least amount of space.

Are these ok to protect them or are the jewel style or regular DVD cases better or it doesn't matter?

Seriously, as long as you're putting them in some kind of sleeve/case/binder/whatever, it's all good. I tend to either put them back on the stacking rings (for bulk backups I only need to check ever once in a while) or my favorite is I got a bunch of these "hanging" CD/DVD sleeves at the dollar store that hold 20 discs in a 4x5 "grid" that I can hang on the wall next to my computer. The front is clear so you can see the discs and read the magic marker liner notes.

But for "hard" cases, whatever you find it easiest to organize should be just fine. The vinyl clamshell cases are nice and I like them because they tend to be thinner than the "hard" shell jewel boxes, plus they're a bit more forgiving in terms of not cracking easily if you press on them slightly (maybe it's just me but I have a tendency to crack the "hard" jewel boxes; never damage the CDs or DVDs but half my cases get cracked somehow).

I use the hinged black cases for my DVD's, but just about anything that keeps the surface of the DVD away from the surface of the case will do. I even store some of my least valuable CD-Rs and DVD-Rs in paper envelopes and those media books without too much trouble. I did lose one CDR when something sticky in the media book adhered to the recording surface

The nice thing about softer cases is that if you're as clumsy as I am, they protect the DVD when, inevitably, you drop it. I did that to some tonight as a matter of fact, although it only fell a foot. A DVD in a soft case can usually fall a good 7 feet without damage. Do NOT try this with a jewel case
