  1. I have a via motherboard (MVP3) and an sblive
non of the fixes work completely unless i turn dma off on my hardrives which basically slows my computer down 80% when capturing
So b4 i burn this steaming pile of silicon Id like to buy a card with good sound quality and absolutly non of the problems associated with the soundblaster (sblive)series of cards.
Cheap is good, cheap and nasty is not
sblibe audigy pls dont even go there
    thanx

I have a ($15 at 'show and sale') Thunder PCI sound card. It works with W2K and XP.
(then again, I stopped using my VIA motherboard for A/V and now use ALI).

  3. I had a Muse card, it was $30 at BestBuy. It ruined everything. So I switched to a $100 SoundBlaster Audigy, and haven't had a sound problem since.

  4. A good card is the Video Logic Sound Fury (a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz clone). It has a good mixer interface and sounds brilliant. No problems with audio/video captures either. Remember to avoid the Soundblaster cards if you have a VIA chipset motherboard as even Creative have admitted that the Live series don't work with them!!

  6. I don't have a via chipset, AMD on a shuttle motherboard, but I have to disable the USB controller when I capture otherwise I get a lot of trash in my audio when I capture at high audio bitrates with the SB Live. I did not have this problem when I was using the haupauge card but it reared it's ugly head with my radeon. Am also running W2K. Not sure what your audio problems are but thought I would throw this at you to see if it might help.

  7. CoCoNiPs, the SBLive problem isn't just cause of VIA, this was proven about a month ago, the problem exists with lots of chips and even on a Pentium 3 and Pentium 4 systems, it's a problem with Creative.

I would also highly recommand the Philips Thunder sound card, it is very cheap (around 50$ to 60$) and gives you better suite of drivers then Creative.

I take it you all mean the "chip timing" issue that makes you drop frames mercilessly? And Sound Blaster cards are bad?

Then just what am I doing with an AMD KT-133a VIA chipset and a Sound Blaster PCI 128?!?!?

I'm off on a quest for one of those Phillips boards...

Sorry about this, but I have an ignorant follow-up question... it's really ignorant, but I've always wanted to know this...

Do sounds cards help, in any way, the speed or precision of processing audio information? As in, say, a .wav or .mp3 editor? Or, is it just a capture timing accuracy improvement.

Believe it or not, I am just that ignorant that I've never known for sure. Stop laughing, really.

  9. Thanx Sefy
im looking up the philips card now and i can find 3 diff types being the acoustic edge, rhythmic edge and Seismic edge
these r uk cards so maybe they just named them diff r these in the same line of cards u were refering too?

    rants about sblive
not wantign to get too much into the problems related with the sblive since they r soooo numerous! and hideous and incredibley ^%$^%&^% ! arggghhh ahem but the interference relates directly in my experience with the hd activity (indicated by the hd light going mad
For me this creates very loud crackling in the sound and very streaky lines in my capture similar to interlacing but a million times worse
This happens noticebly more when im capturing in less compressed formats such as huffyuv or mjpeg since i guess this is when the hd is workign harder and erm the pci bus is busier? These r my guesses of course
Still how can a company get away with producing a product that is in many cases (although not all im sure blah blah) not capable of the tasks for which it is sold surely it is within our consumer rights to ask for our money back?
but since i bought mine oem ill leave it there
    Ciao

  10. I seem to be the only person in the world not to have a problem with his SBLive on a VIA chipset Oh well...

  11. Shabubu, you are propably like me, you don't get any problems cause you propably not a gamer, so you don't use the features of the card

CoCoNiPs, I think the model would be acoustic edge, try checking up it's features and compare to those on the Philips website, as for how Creative gets away with it, just like good old Microsoft, they are big, they allow themselfs to ignore the customers.

I failed to get ANY soundcard to capture audio properly in a VIA based Gigabyte motherboard (tried quite a few, even ISA cards).

I ditched the motherboard and now have an ASUS CUSL2-C (Intel). It works wonderfully now with a cheap Soudblaster PCI-64. I capture uncompressed video using a Matrox Marvel G200 under Windows 2000 with all PCI cards sharing the same interrupt!

  14. I've had SB cards from the SB2.0/Pro/Pro2/AWE and Live and Live 5.1 which I have now, I don't have any probs, but that would be due to the fact, i'm not a gamer, you cannot experience the faults of the cards untill you stress it out.

And I can do regular captures from the TV, and I don't have any noises or interuptions, and i'm pretty much satisifed with it.

CoCoNiPs, try installing latest VIA drivers may fix your problem!

I have a Herculles game furtissimo II sound card, and I have no problems with my duron...
I never manage to make a SB to work fine on capture with the same system (qdi kinetiz 7B motherboard, duron 700, Asus 7700 deluxe ...)
    All the time synch probs.
Looks like, SB cards hates me...

  16. I have a two-year old Turtle Beach Montego II Plus. It's a digital soundcard, meaning it has S/PDIF inputs and outputs (both coax and optical). It also has very little interference (noise) when using the analog inputs. In fact, when I first plugged in headphones and listened to the output of the card, I thought it didn't work. I was accustomed to hearing some hiss and I did not hear any.

I use it for bringing in music from DAT digitally and also for sampling cassettes for digital editing and eventually CD. It's perfect also for capturing TV audio.

When I bought it, it was $149 (which was a bargain). Today, I believe the same card goes for $79.

  17. Funny, I have a VIA KT-133 chipset and a SOundblaster X-Gamer card and am a monster gamer. Never had a bit of trouble with it. It works beautifully in capture and in games....hmmmmm....

  18. Mark, i think it all depends on how sensative your ears are, i've got a friend which just doesn't stop complaining on how this and how that, and he now hates his SB Live, while I love my card, it does everything I need it to do

It also depends on the drivers you use and the BIOS, if you have all those updated, most of the SB Live problems disapper.
