I've read many comments in this forum about returning DVD recorders (some as many as 3-4 times) before getting some satisfaction. I've narrowed my search to 2 recorders having + mode. The Sanyo DRW500 (at WalMart) and the LiteOn (LVW 5005) from the Internet. Should the possibility of returning the item really be a factor in my purchase? I favor having a face-to-face with the seller, but I also am on a budget and like the prices on the Internet. Any problems returning items on the Net? I figure the cost is mine at about $25. Any comments on my recorder choices? I don't hear much about Sanyo. Wondering if that's good or terrible. Thanks for your help.
My thoughts are, the downside buying over the internet is mainly having to ship a unit back to the company for repair or replacement. If it's a heavy item, like a CRT monitor, I try to buy local as the shipping charges really get expensive. There may also be a longer wait for exchange.

If you buy local, you may pay higher costs, along with local taxes. But exchange will be cheaper and quicker. You should also check into the local stores warranty and exchange rules. Some of them still want you to ship it back to the company that made it.

If the item has a low failure rate, then the internet may be the best deal. No taxes in many cases and a better selection of models.

I have the 5005, I'm sure theres some ppl who would recommend the liteon over the sanyo on this board. Anyways, liteons have a problem with the front a/v inputs, it leaves a whine on the recordings. But the rear inputs are perfect. But anyways, I would go with the 5005, if you have a sams club membership they sell it there for 178.99 I believe. The 5005 records to vcd/svcd, audio cds, and dvd+and- media, which is cool in my book. Its the only recorder thats easily hackable as well, you can record absolutely any source, and add an LP (3 hour mode).

I would buy it in the store. Not online.

  5. After having problems with a couple of recorders, I would say store too. That way if you get a recorder you don't really like you can return it and get another brand.

  6. Some online stores like Crutchfield offer no questions asked, free return shipping money back guarantees. I checked out a Denon 1910 upscaling DVD player from them this way and wound up returning it. Didn't cost me a dime, and all I had to do was give them a toll-free call, put their pre-printed return shipping label on the box, and drop it off at the nearest UPS Store.

If you purchase a dvd recorder from walmart.com you are able to take it back to one of the stores. There's no need to ship it back to them. The store will give you another unit or your money back.
