The Tom Baker series was my ERA. Those were aired here in the states back
in the mid 80's if I recall. But, something tells me that those series were
actaully done in the 70's and re-broadcast in the 80's ??

  2. Tom Baker was Doctor Who from 1974 to 1980. IIRC when Doctor Who took off in the USA, it was during the early to mid 80s when Peter Davison was the Doctor (straight after Tom).

The first time I saw Doctor Who was on our local PBS station. It featured Tom Baker. He is and always has been my favorite, especially the episodes that included the second Romana (I still think she's the best companion ever). After his last episode they went back and broadcast from the very beginning although the William Hartnell episodes were in pretty bad shape and were hard to follow. My sister's favorite was Jon Pertwee but he was the Doctor when she was first exposed. I remember watching all of them through Sylvestor McCoy but I don't think I saw all of his episodes. Of all of them, the only Doctor I didn't like was Peter Davison.

I just came across an old VHS tape of a recorded episode "Destiny Of The Daleks". I can't wait to watch it tonight.

I guess the 2005 series will be available at the local video store? I'm not one to watch something more than once.

In the 80's I was working at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). The BBC had rented a small office in the same building and had a Darlik (spelling?) in the reception. Rather cool.

Remember the comedian Spike Milliagan. He had a skit that was a Pakistani Darlik in a mix marriage the an english woman. The skit worked around the Darlik coming home after a hard day of extermating and then it exterminated the pets, each time followed the phrase "put it in the curry". Ah the Darliks were my favourite.

Yea, it's "Dalek", or "the Daleks"

Wow. That's a long time to be a doctor. And, it's shame, really. Because
with the recent departure of the last doctor for seasons 1 and 2, now being
replaced by another doctor, its a shame that these guys can't "commit" !!

Cole; what do you suppose kept *those* doctors in there longer back in the ERA
    vs. today's tv/movie stars ?? ..just curiouse

I think that Christopher Eccleston is the exception to the rule for only doing one year as the previous Doctors' average is pretty much a three year stint.

    William Hartnell 1963 to 1966
    Patrick Troughton 1967-1969
    Jon Pertwee 1970-1974
    Tom Baker 1974 to 1980
    Peter Davison 1981 to 1984
Colin Baker 1985 to 1986 (but was sacked)
    Sylvester McCoy 1987 to 1989

David Tennant has said he would like to be the Doctor for a while, but this is subject to Doctor Who carrying on of course. Having said that, the BBC are now filming series three (Tennant's second) and Tennant IIRC has signed up to do three series, so he is back to the 'traditional' average.

Incidentally, there is a spin-off series about to be screened in the UK (Autumn 06) called Torchwood featuring Captain Jack and there is also talk - after the popularity of Sarah Jane Smith returning in series 2 - of Sarah Jane getting her own series too, all be it aimed at a child audience.

I'm curious of this Sarah Jane, chic. Any pics of her ?

Now, if memory serves me, there always this one companion that I thought
I really licked during the Tom Baker series. But, I think I heard (here)
that he had *two* companions during his raign (spelling) thus far.

Also, I read that our cuity pie, Billie Piper is leaving in season 2 or 3 ??
I really liked her. I hate having to adjust to a new companion. But, life
    goes on

You mean Leela, (spell check) the scantly clad "savage" ?

Baker's companions were Sarah Jane, Harry, Leela, Romana, K9, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan.

I liked Sarah best, with Jon Pertwee.. although Tom Baker was very good too. I'm a little upset with what the writers did to K9 in the new series - but I won't say further in case I spoil it for those who have yet to see it.

Offline has said it all, except that there were two Romanas.

Man, that certainly is a blast from the past, took me back. My favorite as a little girl was Leela the savage. She seemed to be the only one out of all the chics that wasn't completely useless and had something to contribute instead of getting herself into trouble all the time. Broke away from the stereotype.

I remember that there were two Romanas but I can't recall why. Did one of them get fired or something?

The first, Mary Tamn, just decided to only do the one series; Lalla Ward took over as the second Romana the following year. Incidentally, Lalla Ward ended up marrying Tom Baker while they were in the show, but it didn't last long (the marriage, that is).

Finially got to see one of the 2006 eposides. It was the one where you get your face sucked in by the TV. Won't talk any more about the plot encase I spoil it for someone. It was very good.

Reminds me of when I was a kid. B&W TV, one channel only. We were told our eyes would go square from watching too much TV.

Though thematically it was a bit off it really felt more like old doctor who the way the story unfolded. It was the best one of the season IMO.

The latest series is quite good, I won't go into details as it may spoil for someone. The story with the master is 3 parts and I've watched the first 2 parts, so I'd better not miss the last part ah!

Funny you should bring this up again. I just saw an advertisement from my local PBS station that they are going to start broadcasting the "new" Doctor Who series. Thursdays at 10:00 starting in Oct.

Which comment? The one about Star Wars and Star Trek (whatever those are)? Or the one about the big important American magazine?

David Tennent will do 4 "feature length special episodes" this year, and be replaced by a new Doctor for 2010.
