Panasonic DMR e30 help

Hi,
I'm having problems getting my dvd recorder to detect any channels. Here are the following options I've tried. Cable line ---->e30--->tv this way I took out the cable box and hit auto tune on the dvd recorder and it says it could not find any channels then I tried it this way.....cable line ----> cable box ----> em0 -----> tv and I tried to auto detect again and nothing no signal at all. Im running out of ideas...any of you guys have a clue??? I have comcast cable and the box they provided me with is a regular older analog box which I don't really need since my tv has a tuner built into it..any help is appreciated...Thanks

During setup did you select cable?

yes I selected catv and then did the auto tuning but nothing works. I may have to get it looked at....
