I started backing up my DVD's about 2 months ago after getting all my info here by reading the guides and forums. On the first 400 I used Decrypter to rip, Shrink to re-author, and Decrypter to burn and had a 99% success ratio. Of the few that Decrypter would not burn because of "encountered errors" Nero burned with no problem. The couple of coasters were caused by bad media. The last 100+ I have just used Shrink to rip and re-author and Decrypter to burn and all have turned out fine. I can't tell a difference in quality using either method. My question is can someone tell me the advantages of using Decrypter over Shrink to rip? Not using Decrypter to rip saves an average of 15 mins per movie and with over 1000 to back up the time savings is huge. If someone can tell me the benefits of using Decrypter to rip over Shrink then I will continue to do it that way. Thanks in advance.

I generally use DVDShrink exclusively to backup DVDs. So far haven't needed to use DVDDecrypter to rip. But I have it there available. I use it to burn on occasion, but normally use Nero because it works fine for me.

If you are happy with Shrink and haven't ran into a video that needs Decrypter, then maybe that's the way to go.

You probably realize that DVD5 movies don't need the be 'shrunk', you can just use Decrypter to copy them. Not many commercial DVD5 videos out there, though, mainly old movies and even then Shrink will just copy them at 100%.

  4. While Decryptor is an excellent program, I perfer to just use Shrink, and maybe throw AnyDVD in to the loop should the dvd include 'newer' copy protection that Shrink can not handle.

The advantage to using DVD Decrypter first is that it is usually "better" than the ripper built-in to DVDShrink.

"Better" in that DVDShrink will sometimes give you errors when ripping whereas DVD Decrypter generally has no such problems.

I suppose you can continue to use DVDShrink and only switch back to DVD Decrypter for specific DVD discs should you encounter a ripping error with DVDShrink on said DVD discs.

  6. 1) DVD Decrypter will work on disks that DVD Shrink can't handle, such as the ones with the new type of copy protection.
    2) On my system, overall processing time is less if I use DVD Decrypter rather than DVD Shrink to rip disks.
    3) If you are trying to do multiple disks, and your computer has the power, you run both programs at the same time on different disks. Decrypting one while shrinking another. Nyah Levi

I guess its all down to personal preference.

DVD Decrypter has been updated to handle newer protections like Sony's ARccoS. I think DVD Shrink would have problems with such protections.

  9. I use DD on dvd5s. It just seems faster than shrink.

I always use DVD Decrypter to rip because I can see all the options and therefore have greater confidence and control over what it's doing. With DVD Shrink you have to trust to a large extent what the author thinks is best.

A more tangible reason for using it is that DVD Decrypter has the option of removing all PUOs from IFOs and PGCs. I hate PUOs, so I have these options checked (which is not the default). I do not believe that DVD Shrink has the ability to remove PUOs during the rip.
