I never got into tabs myself, but I know they're popular. I took lessons and can read music, but it's not something most rock musicians do, especially if they're playing their songs live. However, if you want to learn other songs, tabs can help. The main thing is to enjoy playing and not let anyone else tell you how to play.....

Hello,
Tompika - thanks for the link
Johnnycnote - yeah I'm starting to practice reading sheet music. It's gonna take awhile but I'm willing to invest the time. So far I've only taken the time for three or four 50 minute session. But I'm starting to build up my familiarity with the guitar.
Here's my self made practice sheet I copied out of one of my books I got for my own verbage:
I'm slowly but surely developing a rythm - I think
This will be very informative and hopefully if I stick with it I'll actually be able to play some songs in the future

BUMP!
Hi,
Well I haven't really practiced much in the last several weeks. I did start up again a little this week.
I started by trying to make my own practice tabs. I used my beginner book I bought and transcribed a couple basic songs into tabs with my own notes. I think I got it figured out a little!
The two I copied were TEN LITTLE INDIANS (not politically correct, I know no offense to anyone just practice material). And LONDON BRIDGES. I could actually recognize the bridges song! That was impressive. I'm no where near proficient or fast but I can make it sound like a song (sort of). That's pretty encouraging.

I know it's been almost a year and a half, but how goes the guitar, yoda? I'll be getting one soon and I'd be interested to hear your experiences starting out as a beginner like myself.

Actually I haven't picked it up in a long time.
But I was able to get to the point of playing simple melodies almost to the point you could recognize the tuneI was making my own guitar tabs from regular music notes. It worked pretty well.

Well let me put my 2 cents
to start you choose a classical guitar ( has you showed in the pic ) everybody already said the best thing to play guitar is practicing and if you can take lessons even better but if you just want to jam with your friends ... its gonna take more time but you already have a advantage, you have a friend who plays... ask him alots of advise and tips , now i can give you my own tips i`ve being playing for 12 years now . first just start from the basic cords then Bar cords ( its when u use the index finger to bar all the strings , then power cords ( you gonna like this ones ) and then it comes the pentatonics , this is when it comes to soloing . but to starters this is gonna need alot of patience . My other advice is get a realy nice accoustic or electric guitar for 200$ you can have a jay turser with a 10w amp ( if you are in the north american continent ) , because the one you showed in the pic it looks like you have been riped off.
About the strings is like this... there aren't electric strings or acustic strings but nickelplated or bronze ones the only difference is gauge size, secondly leave always the strings on tune on your guitar and away of sun and humidity . good luck
Cheers -
Hey yoda,
First off, congrats on trying to pick up something like this. Like it was said, there is no greater feeling that playing for your family or friends and them having that "glowing" look in their eye. Its amazing.
1) I learned how to play on a very old, very blah guitar. While I learned to get around it, once I got my 2nd guitar (a les paul) it was a WORLD of difference. You wouldnt even believe. so you can learn on a crappy guitar but once you realize that you want to play more and are serious about it, inveset the money. You WONT regret it. Besides man, the girlies LOVE a boy with a nice .. axe
2) I have been playing music for about 17 years. Guitar, bass, drums, and I can dabble on the keyboards. Start with guitar, but dont be afraid to pick up that violin once in awhile and learn that. The more instruments you learn, the more "aspect understanding" you will have.
3) Practice, practice, practice. Dont burn yourself out, but on the same token, set aside a certain amount to pratice each and every day. Try to make it at a time when you arent dead tirerd (ie. right before bed time) so you are alert. I used to exercise a little before practicing. Get the blood flowing a little.
4) Stick with it. Its UBER frustrating when you want to learn something and you cant. But keep at it. It takes 10 minutes to learn the basic chords but a lifetime to master. Been playing over 15 years and I still learn stuff from time to time. Keep at it, and you will get it.
All the best!!! Keep your progress known.
Send a PM if you have a specific question too.
LG
EDIT: I didnt look at the date lol. Didnt realize it was an old thread. Ooooooooooops. -

I even got a real instruction book and video for christmas but just never got around to it.
But I already know more about guitars then people who've never picked up one before.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
That's good, then. Don't be surprised if I drop you a PM with guitar questions.

just wanted to echo what the others have been saying about this classical/nylon string guitar. You will find that when you go to play an acoustic guitar the strings will be considerably harder to work with.
