Its been a while, and a system format since i last used rebuilder.

and some of my memory has faded with it.

I could have sworn that you either had the basic or retail version of CCE. The cool kids(including me) had the expensive retail edition.

now all that i am seeing floating around is the SP edition

When I go to cinemacrafts' website they say they also have a Pro version, and "Xtream" version.

so whats the deal with these? am I shorting myself by using SP and I should I be patient and wait to stumble uppon these new enoders.

Also, am I right to beleive that SP is just "basic" registered?

    Thanks a bunch

PS also I know the rebulder settings are simple, but each guide always skips a step or 2, let me know if you have any advice or links
    thanks again

Let's see Basic costs US$58 and the SP version costs US$1950 - I'd be guessing that there is a lot of difference. Actually, the major differences are the amount of control you have over the encoding, and ability to use ecl files. CCE Basic limits the amount of control you have over the settings, and doesn't use ECL files. SP gives you a great deal of control, enabling you to encode seperate parts of the video with different settings (eg. a much higher bitrate for fades than for talking heads) and the ability to use ECL files. The underlying encoding engine is pretty much the same.

As Rebuilder uses only a relatively small subset of the settings, you aren't really losing much by buying CCE Basic if this is all you are going to use it for.

I'd be careful just how much stumbling you do around here, as stumblers aren't well regarded. As for setting up DVD RB, there is now an all in one setup that can do pretty much everything for you, or you can use the guides. The guides worked for me.

  3. HC encoder which is free has gotten some good feedback. It's slow 5-6hr per movie. I also like Procoder 2.

  4. I think that basic only allows one or two passes per encode though.

I wonder if there is a work around for this.

  5. I have the SP version and I only do 3 pass, mind you i am backing up dvd's of 24, family guy and law and order, they each contain 7-8gb of material, cutting the extra's to 25% and keeping everything except french audio and subs...so far so good. I used to do the 6 pass but the time vs. quality was not worth it, 890-950 minutes for one dvd . Yes the quality from 2 vs. a 3 pass is marginally noticeable, but anything over 4 pass on CCE is a waste of time IMO.

    Ok, differences:

    1. Basic only does 2-pass VBR. SP allows for an unlimited number of passes.

    2. Basic doesn't do ECL files - not a problem if you just use ECLCCE, which RB supports.

    3. Basic offers less control - but rebuilder is intended to use Basic, so the extra controls in SP are moot.

Now, as for which version to use with Rebuilder... I'd avoid 2.70, since rebuilder seems to have ... "issues" with it. Also they seem to have moved to a new system with 2.70, there's a new "works" version which Rebuilder doesn't support AT ALL.

So I'd stick with 2.69 Basic, to be honest, unless you want extra passes in which case 2.69 SP.
