I have several tapes of home video that I am editing and burning to DVD... I have the basics of video editing down pretty well (I have edited several dozen VCD's), but would like to do something a little advanced now...

Like most home videos, I have some interesting voice dialog that I wish to preserve, and then there are the long minutes without any voices at all... I have some background music that I would like to add. So far what I did was add an audio envelope, and simply fade the music out when there are foreground voices. Now I'm wondering if there is a way to automate this ??? I need something that will sort of act like compositing but for audio tracks - when there's a lot of loud voices on track 1, it would automatically reduce gain on bachround track 2... and of course, when there are no foreground voices, the background music goes to full volume....

anyone know how I could do this ???

  3. I'll try and help... Can you just copy your envelope (using envelope selection tool) and paste it over your tracks as needed. This will help in that you won't have to manually add the points each time.

There isn't any way to "automate" this such as searching out your files and automatically do this for you at least within Vegas. There might be other software that you can get to parse your audio files, no idea what though..

    Hope this helps at all...

I just use the volume envelope on the two tracks and adjust as required. How is software going to know which dialogue is important, and which is crap ?

i don't expect software to know which dialog is important and which is crap.... all I want to do is designate one as dialog and another track as background music. then the software should automatically raise the background volume when there is no dialog and similarly fade out the bg music when there is some foreground audio - from there I can adjust manually ...

Radio stations have this for DJ's, so I know I'm not asking for anything out of this world... if not a Vegas function, maybe an add-on solution ??

I'm no expert, but it sounds to me like 'compositing' for audio tracks... only simpler...!
