    I got a really dumb question. What's the fastest way to find out if a movie is PAL or NTSC? Because my dvd player will play anything I never worried about it. But I want to bring some of them with me on a trip and they can can't play PAL. Any programs out there that can just stick the disk in and it will tell me?

  2. If it's a pressed(store bought) disc it will say on the disc.
    If it's a DVDR use IfoEdit and open any .IFO file.

    Or check the frames per second.

    25fps = PAL.

    29.97 or 23.976 = NTSC.

    That's true unless its a home brewed movie. Though unlikely, someone could set it for region 2 and still record it in NTSC.

    Actually you can't go by region as i also own legit japanese dvd's that are region 2 yet NTSC, And you can't make a dvdr any one specific region 8)

    You can do what MOVIEGEEK said & you can also use AVIcodec to check the frame rate.

    * Region 1 - The U.S., U.S. territories and Canada
    * Region 2 - Europe, Japan (NTSC Land), the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland
    * Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong
    * Region 4 - Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean
    * Region 5 - Russia (okay, former Russia), Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia
    * Region 6 - China
    * Region 7 - Unused
    * Region 8 -Airlines/Cruise Ships

    Use Avicodec or Gspot and look at the frame rate and the resolution.

    Okay,
    I really never use GSPOT, but every file i opened with it on a pressed PAL dvd not one would give the framerate or resolution it will for an .avi...

    Where AVIcodec does for me everytime regardless if it is a .VOB on a dvd or a .mpg file or .avi on my PC 8) seem's to be a little more versatile

  10. Hey Lord Smurf===can't you just look at it and tell? All that additional resolution should just jump right out at ya!

    Or do tv's somehow reduce the benefits of higher resolution==or even bitrates?????

    No need to respond.==Just more evidence that most people in most situations just can't tell the difference.

    Having fun "all the time." Bobbo.

    The "grain of truth" herein though is that "most of the people, most of the time==can't tell."

    I also don't notice flickering of lights at 60 mhz as some poor folks do. Who needs that acuity???? It is truely a gift and a curse if you can.

    One of the more famous examples of self delusion is the coke vs pepsi challenge. You swear you can tell the difference until you are tested. I have examined and rejected the same hype with dolby b & c, 40,000mhz speakers, coffee, wine, cheese, vinyl vs digital, wav vs mp3, and high bit rate vs lower bit rate. When you can tell a difference, is the cost worth it?? It should be "valued" that people have different values, needs, desired outcomes.

    60mhz...Huh?...40,000mhz...What?

    IMHO the differance between 720x480 and 720x576 is not noticable.

  15. 60 mhz (sp?)==the frequency of American electricy such that some people see neon lights or computer screens flicker as the sign wave of the electricity reverses. The reverse is *there* and some people see it. So, given that is true===should we all buy 75 mhz refreshing screens?? I think not.

    Years ago in high fidelity stereo shows, the push was on for everyone to buy speakers that had a frequency response of 40,000 mhz. Most human cannot hear above 30K (or whatever)--so people were being conned into buying speakers for their dogs.

    Mp3 works by not recording "sound" in the 40,000 mhz range because we can't hear it. Vinyl and .wav evidently do==does that make it better if we can't hear it? I don't think so.

    Some would say you have bad eyes because you think 576 is not "noticeable" or "better" than 480===but then they have to use software to tell the difference themselves. Just fun to think about what we are marketed and told. Listen because these atuned folks do have expertise we don't, but don't spend money on what you don't need.

    I can see both: 60 Hz screen flicker (have to use higher settings) and 50 Hz luminescent flicker.

    Not so. I can hear up to 18.5 kHz (on some equipment 19 kKz and no, I'm not a robot ). Most older equipment had some freq. response rolloff on both ends of 20-20kHz. Since the 20-20kHz description was overused by a low end companies/products higher end manuf. started using amps freq. response desc. 0-100kHz and speakers above 20kHz to indicate that within 20-20Khz range they were flat(er). Many buyers still dont know what is 20Hz-20KHz +1/-3db for example and how to translate these figures into something useful. That is why putting 40kHz is an indication that this is a more capable speaker (technically correct description if true).
    Sound is more complex then just main frequency. Instruments also generate several hamonics that (although some inaudible) modify the main freqency giving it richer, "beefier". more complex sound.

    but to some ears this (mp3's) is still (audibly) inferior...

    on average size TV screen hard to distinguish but larger size will make it quite evident.

    You need to use version 2.52 beta 1 for MPEG2 and VOB files.

  18. Proxyx99===yes, audio is difficult. I bought most of the tale.

    I still don't "understand" how years back everything had to be Monster Cables and pre-amp for everything to be "the best" and today with computers everything gets run thru those tiny plugs from the microphone and speaker leads. My head tells me its different electronics--but emotionally, my big cables and pre amps are rusting away in the closet waiting for a rebirth.

    So you CAN hear and see all that stuff? That makes you very rare. I try not to be dogmatic in my posts==only that "most" people can't tell the difference "most" of the time. That leaves room for folks like you.

    Whats your opinion==will a good ATI All in Wonder card give "as good as VHS" picture in Mpeg-1 352X240 mode (1150 bits) ? I sure would like to edit commercials out on my computer rather than on my Liteon 5045 but I can't find any software/hardware that will give as good a picture AT LOW RESOLUTIONS. Contrary to derision--I wish my eyes were worse than they are./////bobbo.

    Start playing it in PowerDVD. Right click on screen | Configuration | Information and it tells you the frame rate, the colour system (PAL or NTSC), the number of vertical scan lines (625 or 525) and the refresh frequency (50 or 60Hz) any of which will identify it as PAL or NTSC for you.

    Well, if you can show it then you will be the first one

    Because i have searched high and low for over a year for a program that would burn a "DVDR" to one specific region and even had others say it also but when it came down to it... they were wrong

    make one set to only one region and then check it with DvdinfoPro, IfoEdit, any reliable program and i'll bet any amount of money it WILL NOT be that one specific region.... 8)

    Me and jimmalenko went through this quite some time ago... he said the same thing but when it came down to it, you can't...

    I have tried every program imaginable and have found NONE that will authour and burn a dvdr ONE SPECIFIC region....

    If anyone can show me one that will and prove it and i will check.. i will admit i was wrong and be happy that it can be done

    Even when DVD Shrink is set to only one region it still encodes to at least 3 if my memory serves me correctly... i would have to look up the old thread as i just gave up on it awhile ago... because i was on a quest to find a way but after a year i let it go

    I even posted the thread as "HOW to make a dvdr set to only region1"
    And got nadda

    Exactly... just becuase the software tells you it is making it only one region... does not make it so either

    And if you set your player to region 2, encode the dvd to region 1, and your player does not play it.... that means it is only encoded with one region code ?? because if region, say, 4 & 6 are also encoded to the disc, your player still will not play it... does not mean it is only encoded with only one specific region code 8)

    @hrlslcbr same as i said above 8)
