  1. Hi,

My problem is that the (S)VCD won´t play smoothly
    on my dvd player.

    I wouldn´t call it stuttering.
The playback just "hangs" constantly approximately once a second.
It doesn´t seem to depend on whether it is an action scene
    or anything else.
Furthermore it is only the video - audio isn´t affected at all.

I´ve browsed around a lot in this forum and found
out that the audio (too high bitrate) can be the problem.

Bit I´ve tried the same video without audio and the result was the same.

Quality itself is just fine and it plays perfectly on the computer.

Furthermore this only does occur when I encode .avi files
to VCD files myself (with TMPEG).
A DVD Rip (with DVD2SVCD) doesn´t have this problem so I guess the media or the player shouldn´t be the problem.

Any filter or setting in TMPEG that might help?

Thank you very much in advance!

    Bye,
    Terratom

No, it's the total bitrate (audio, video and program stream) being too high which is the problem. To be VCD compliant the total bitrate (video and audio combined) should not exceed 1394400 bits/sec (75 sectors/s by 2324 bytes/sector) - and actually you want to keep a bit spare to allow for program stream overheads.

SVCD specifies up to 2x read speeds, so the maximum bitrate there is 150 sectors/s == 2788800 bps, and again that is for video, audio and programs streams together.

Ok, that is what the standards say: in reality you often find that your DVD player will accept higher than standard bitrates - eg. mine allows an (x)VCD to run at 2x - but you have to experiment to find out the exact limits.
