  1. I recently purchased a LG multi format burner from Sams Club. I am now noticing when backing up my DVDs using DVD Decrypter or Nero 6.6 (creating an image first, then to the new DVD rather than a direct transfer on the fly to use Nero's term) my HD space is reduced by about the size of the DVD being backed up. I know the names of the files and where both programs are coping the image to on the HD and that file is being eliminated.
I did not notice this problem with my older TDK burner using DVD Decrypter (and had only used Nero on the fly with it as best I remember). Also, DVD Shrink and my old copy of Easy DVD CD Creater 6 do not cause this problem.
Could the LG be creating a buffer somewhere that I can not find. I have used Powerdisk to search for large gigabyte size files and found none. Also, when I uninstalled a few recently installed programs that had nothing to do with DVDs (including Word Perfect), the space reappeared like magic on the HD. Twice. However, the problem still continues (although one time the HD space actually went up about 2 gigabytes). I eliminated system restore, ran scandisk or what ever they call it now, and defragmented the HD. No success. Do not see a Windows swap file but that is the only other possibility I can think of. Help.

PS. Windows XP (SP2) on an inexpensive one year old HP computer.

    Thanks.

Do you run Norton's anti-virus ? It has an option to 'ptotect' the recycle bin and keep track of things you delete. Even emptying the recycle bin doesn't get the space back. You have to empty the Norton Protected Recycle bin.

That's about the only thing I can think of that you haven't already done.

  3. Good catch. I currently use McAfee antivirus, but had at one time Norton Utilities 2002 on this computer and a 90 day trial version of Norton Antivirus 2004 came with the computer. Apparently one of them set up the recycle bin by default. I right clicked the recycle bin and found and told told it to empty the Norton protected files and 7+ gigabytes reappeared.

Not sure why I did not notice this issue before, but this appears to be the problem.

Thanks a lot. I was about to pull what little hair I have left over this.
