Read the WHAT IS...on the left margin of this FORUM

    in short
.MPG is a three letter file extension

    and
.MPEG is a four letter file extension
(often truncated to .mpe, case you were wondering about that one)

MPEG stands for Motion Picture Experts Group

has no bearing on content vis-a-vis 1 or 2

  3. I have the same question and will google it when time permits. I did however check the "what is" on the left and could not find mpg even listed.

Dcsos==is there something we are missing or did you shoot too fast? You can berate me here or elsewhere in the forum. (smile)

MPEG is an abbreviation for "Motion Picture Experts Group". But Windows only support three letter file name extensions so it's shortened to MPG.

Way back in ancient MPeg1 history, the MPEG (the group) used *.mpeg extensions when working with the unix operating system. Microsoft shortened it to *.mpg to fit the 8.3 DOS file extension structure.

Before you ask, the same was later done with *.html to *.htm.

Windows does not only support 3 letter file extensions...at least not since version 3.1 of Windows.

Your file extensions can be up to 256 characters long.

Wrong. Windows 3.1 was still DOS. Win 95 introduced Joliet structure.

  10. The dialetic is working!!!

    On my Win 98SE system:

I played with some of my "short" files and found that when right clicking on files with a .mpg extension--the property box showed them as .mpg files.

Clicking on a .mpeg extension--the property box shows them as a .mpe file.

If I change the mpg to a mpeg extension, there is no other discernable difference in the file or how it plays.

If I change these extensions to .mpe then the file icon changes to the windows media player and that is the program that then plays the file.

So--these extensions do all relate to one another and are slightly different.

Still can't find this explained in the "what is" section to the left.

Thanks for the info===like high school algebra, I know this will be useful!!

(In fact it mostly explains why some downloaded movies that initially won't play will play when the file extensions are played with.===think I'll read the forum for a few hours and then post the question that brought me here==>software to record at VCD 1150 bit rate that matches my Liteon stand alones. I have faith the answer is here!!)

Of course not - it's still the same file. You don't change if you change your name.

That's how Windows works. You just tell it to use application X to open files whose name ends with ".???" and it will do so. You can tell Windows to use WMP to open .PDF files, and it will try, probably go look for some codec to download.
That mpe opens in WMP but mpeg doesn't is just because the OS has created a link between "mpe" to WMP, but no such link exist for "mpeg".

IIRC, Macs are more intelligent, and actually checks what the file you're trying to open really is, and uses the right application to open it.

Learn to use the right click "open with" command to choose the playback application. There is also a check mark under "choose program" where you can change the file association default.

I've had a great number of customers having problems with that "every" file they try to open, would cause Adobe Reader/Acrobat Reader to open, regardless of what they clicked on - a mystery, until I found that Acrobat Reader is usually the topmost application in the "Open with" dialog that shows when you click an unknown file type, and the user just clicks "OK" in that dialog...

  14. ok so you are saying they are both basically the same so why would a program like videoReDo have a tick box for both when only one will do..

Lord Smurf, actually try reading what I wrote. I said Windows supports more than 3 letter extensions -- in every version since Win 3.1...

LordSmurf is correct. (If a little blunt). Your phrase is an inclusive statement meaning it includes 3.1. You meant to say "in every version after 3.1" or "in every version since Win95".

...and my apologies for snapping back so quickly LordSmurf. I'm running on zero sleep and ten cans of Cola a day. Not a great combination for hanging out in discussion forums!
