hey everyone, i want to send a large file to my friend via internet, he kinda lives across the country, and this is probably the most convenient way. the video file is around 550 MB, and i was wondering is there a way to upload this file onto a web page and have my friend download of the web page? please post generously, and ALL advice is welcome, thanks

  2. Cut it into chunks as a .rar in winrar.
Send about 4 meg at a time.
I know of NOwhere that can take a 550mb file, especially not free.
There's an email type setup you can get to send 50mb at a time, but I forget the name of it.
You'd be better off burning a CD of the file and express (snailmail) it.

there is a program called SendLink that lets you set up a 'hyperlink' and email it to your friend
he simply clicks it and downloads directly from your PC, kinda like a P2P or something along those lines

If you're on broadband, you can set up your own computer as a server using no-ip.com

What you do is register with them, then they let you sign up with yoursite.no-ip.org (or .biz, .net and others)

Windows XP pro has a built-in server, or you could use Apache. It may take a bit of work to set up the whole deal, but in the end, you always have a way to send those ginormous files.

There's always P2P, or even bittorrent. Just install BT and make a torrent file, email it to your friend, then let him dl the file (after installing BT).

yes - secure in that only you have the link it will give you ...

if you want more security - they have SSL , same thing but encrypted sessions .. link is there on that page

  18. What's your upload cap?
How fast and how far away physically is the server you're sending to?
Are you sending compressed, or raw data?
Too many variables, but it'll take awhile to send a gig, no matter how fast.
You'll probably download it 4x faster than upload, especially on ADSL.

  24. Upload cap is the maximum amount of bandwidth your ISP allows you to SEND. ADSL is usually one quarter of your maximum download bandwidth.
Cable can be between 1/4 and 1/2, but usually on the lower end.
Try www.dslreports.com and use their bandwidth tester to find out.
Find the server: if you know it's URL, then you can open a DOS box, and type: ping the.url.here
It will show you the IP of the server.
    You then type: tracert the.ip.you.got
It will show you how many "hops" it takes to get to that server from your computer.
More is worse, especially if they timeout.

Avi is semi-compressed data, depending on the codec used.

Hint: Stick the disk in a plastic holder, inside a bubblewrap, pay $1.20 for postage, and it'll still get there in one piece.
