  1. Hi,

A quick question (?). Very annoying pause between some chapters on some DVDs I have received in trades - music DVDs.

I have a Philips DVDR80 standalone DVD player/recorder that play these DVDs fine but there are 2 seconds pauses on some DVDs.

If I play the same DVD in my iMac it plays flawlessly. What gives?

Different from a pause caused by the layer transition?

  3. There is no layer, never was one. It has been a DVD5 all along. It's exactly at the CHAPTER break(s). On some DVDs with every chapter break, on some just once.

Could have been authored that way to be a pause rather than
appear as a transition between chapters.

In the wonderful world of DVD authoring, you can set
between chapters a 2-5 sec pause before proceeding
to the next chapter, or you can set a short video clip
to play between, or a fade/dissolve/blur before going
to the next chapter, depending on (1) the software
    package used to author,
and (2) the content of the audio and video.

for instance in DVDSP3, you can create a Play All
feature that navigates the chapters by inserting markers,
and your markers do NOT have to be in consistent order
on the timeline. Instead of jumping from chp1, 2, 3, and 4
in logical progression, you can set it go chp3, 1, 4, then 2.
You can also set pauses before the switch to the next chapter,
or set it to be "none" for smooth operability.

  5. Hi, and thanks for the info.

However, this is a live music DVD where the annoying pause is right in betweed two parts of a medley, so definately not intended to be there.

I received it as an .iso data disc and burned it as a DVD, it plays flawlessly except for that annoying pause.

One .ifo and one .bup file was altered by Toast 6.0.9 like Toast does many times (discussed here...)

...so I'm wondering what went wrong. Out of maybe 80 DVDs I have burned there are only two with this kind of error.

  6. Seems to be more an isseu with your dvd player in combination of revering to chapters start and jump. I use to have that as well from building my own dvd's with chapters, end chapter and jump chapter, now i only leave markers and no jump and end and now they all play flawlessly.

  7. Just a hunch, but...

Are you sure those are actually "chapters" and not "titles". Maybe the Mac breezes right through each title, while the set-top dvd player is pausing as it switches titles.
