    Can anyone tell me what the best way is to burn a DVD from avi files?

    Many has spoken on that subject. Depending on the properties of the AVI files, different methods and approaches might be needed.

    VSO DivXToDVD seems to be the easiest way to me. It says DivXToDVD but it seems to handle most AVI and MPEG files. If you want to use freeware only then you can use DVDshrink to join the VOBs and DVDdecrypter to burn the DVD. If you want to add menus, then you need to buy an Authoring program like TMPGEnc DVD Author.
