    Subject pretty much says it...

One of my pals just upgraded from W98 to XP. Had been using ProToolsFree (yeah, I know...), mainly cuz of integrated Audio+Midi.(He's a composer/music educator).
I thought I'd help him get a LOW-PRICED (hopefully free) replacement--since PTFree doesn't do 2k/XP, and suggested Audacity, but it doesn't have integrated MIDI.

    Any suggestions?

    TIA,

    Scott

if he's an educator, I think there's a stripped-down version of Logic that he can get for free.

otherwise, I would look for Magix Music Studio 7, or MMS2004 - I see both at my local used-book store for about $7-10. They'll each handle something like 48 tracks of audio and 1,000 midi tracks, VST effects, etc. etc.

Now that Logic is part of Apple, the Windows version is dead. Also, didn't see any educators' free version on their site--it's especially hard to see any educator stuff on Apple's site unless you have their educator/school district account info in hand.

I'll check out Magix, but it looks like the free/cheap version is too crippled to do much. Probably same with Quartz Audiomaster.

    Thanks anyway,

Thanks, that sounds like it might be usable for his needs. (Band teacher/Jazz Tubist/Composer/ChurchCantor). Downloading now. I'll let you know what he says.
