Hello all,
I have a NEC-2500A (which is supposed to burn up to 8X) running on a P4, 3.2ghz, 1.5g Sony Vaio. I am using Ritek G05 DVD-R media, but average a burn speed of only 3.7X in CopytoDVD, and a max speed of 4.1X.
The only think I can think of that would be causing the slow burn speed is the DVD burner's firmware. It is 1.06 [F], which is what it was when I installed it. Does anybody know if this is in fact what the problem is, and if so, how to upgrade the firmware? I've heard flashin firmware is a bit risky and would appreciate any guidance in the matter. Thank you in advance!

Sounds like you may have PIO mode enabled instead of DMA, there's alot of threads here on how to check and change this, you can find them by searching for 'PIO'.
Regarding the firmware, although I doubt it's to blame for the burn speed issues I'd suggest upgrading to this firmware - it's an excellent firmware:

It can be easily changed within Windows with the link I provided.
