  1. I have a Philips dvdr80 video recorder. It is connected thru s video and I cannot get the closed captioning to appear when I watch recorded DVDs. Can anyone help? Do I need to connect it differently?

My guess would be it is not being recorded. It isn't part of the regular video stream and I would guess it isn't being output from your source into the recorder.

Closed Captioning IS part of the regular video stream (analog), but depends on device (and source) whether it is filtered out upon digitizing/encoding or whether it gets recognized as Line21 data and incorporated as PrivateDATA PES in the VOBs.

Test playability, by using a pressed DVD known to have CC. Assuming the recorder plays that, try recording off air something that has CC (like the news). If it doesn't pass that (and there's no menu to engage that) then your recorder probably won't record CC. With Philips brand, though, I'd be surprised that it didn't (Pioneers all do).

    Your connection/cabling should be fine.

Where is it NOT playing? If you view your disc on a TV, it should display. If you view your disc on a computer, they may NOT display. PowerDVD doesn't display CC's if the disc flag for CC's is "on", whether the CC's are there or not.
