  1. hi,
i recently pre-ordered a PSP and i am currently using handbrake to convert all my personal DVD's to mp4 for uploading onto the PSP. is anyone else doing this or will be? i wanted to compare other ways of doing this. i am trying to save video/audio quality while also trying to squeeze as many mp4's onto a memory sitck as possible. i begining to believe you can't have one with the other.

read the rules that are on top of the page everytime you post...

"Do NOT ask for warez...Warez includes downloaded copyrighted movies, movies that are not yet released on VHS/DVD and copying rented movies..."

consider yourself on the virge of getting banned.

neversummer79, just ignore all the netcops for now. Try and stick to the rules, but despite what Choirboy says, you are not going to get banned for mention of warez in your very first post on this board.

If you do a search for PSP in the mac forum and ffmpegX forum you should find some info that helps you. ffmpegX has a specific PSP setting.

    Hope this helps.

  9. thanks for all the positive and nevative feedback people. now that i fully understand the meaning of warez, it will not be mentioned again. i guess i should have asked before i opened my mouth. sorry to offend anyone!

so iam not to use handbrake, great...i've already gone through half my collection just for the sole purpose of watching them on my PSP this coming week. i did do some reserch in the other forums on this topic, but it seems everything is pretty much PC based. i just know the basics of video converting and not too much off the technical terms as we all know. i have recently purchased PSPware for the mac and from what i understand i was to drag the mp4's that i have converted with handbrake into the PSPware window and sync it. that's it.

now i am hearing it's not as simple as that, i guess anything outside of an apple product isn't. if anyone has the right/simple information on how to do this, or any information that would increase my knowledge in digital video would be greatly appreciated. i wanted to post in this forum, so i could talk with other mac guys and not try to take on the cross platform conversation. thanks again

  12. i looked into iPSP and all i heard was problems with this and problems with that. there is actually a couple of third party programs out there that support mac to psp. out of all the sites and ratings i checked PSPware is the way to go. what is the program called that is coming out on the 24th? is it shipped with the PSP bundle? from what i read, even on the sony site, is that the software shipped with the PSP is not compatible with mac's, like everything else on this planet. when will people learn?

iPSP is whats coming out, its the new revised version, that WORKS. With more features for all your PSP needs. PSPware also doesnt convert vob, wmv, some avis, and WILL NOT ACCEPT .m4a's and some MP3s. iPSPs encoding time is about 5x faster than PSPware, and the has the ability to do fine tuning encodes for every memstick size.

    512 MB

    Around 2.5 hrs on EP
    Around 1.5 hrs on SLP

    1 GB

    Around 5 hrs on EP
    Around 2 hrs on SLP

I usually have a movie or a few TV shows, and then 500 megs free for music. Also, if you are in one of the areas listed on the iPSP website, pick up the Special Release Day Disc.

What is the quality/resolution difference between EP and SLP modes?

  17. alright, finally picked up my PSP. now i am trying to get movies on it?!? no as simple as click and drag. i have a handfull of converted movies from handbrake which someone mentioned the PSP will not accept and then I have a handfull from ffmpegX, using the PSP preset conversion. i also have PSPware and iPSP, still trying to decide which is better. with all of this you would think i could get a single freaking movie on there. i have a 512MB card which is the only one they offer as of now, so there is enough room. using PSPware, i drop the movie in the window and hit sync to start the transfer. it takes about 2 seconds and it's done, but no memory loss on the card and no movie? i am getting a little frustrated here. anyone feeling the same frustration or even better is anyone actually watching their converted movies on the PSP?

EP is watchable quality, SLP is more UMD quality.

This is why I told you PSPware doesnt work. You need to RE CONVERT your movies with iPSP. THEN transfer them to your PSP. Then they will work. iPSP will take your files that you have converted.

  19. okay, after a night with my computer, psp and hours searching forums for answers, i found one very usefull site that should have been mentioned in the packing of the psp. here it is...
    http://www.connect.com/psp/index.html
i hope this helps others struggling with the same problem. i found the best route to get movies on your psp from your mac is this
    1. use ffmpegX to convert your movie using the psp preset
    2. connect your psp via usb and either go to the website above and follow
tuturial or just open the drive volume that appears on your desktop
when you connect the psp. create a folder in this window (not the psp
folder) called MP_ROOT and inside this folder create another one
called 100MNV01, this is where you store all your movies.
    3. with the converted movies from ffmpeX just drag and drop into the
folder mentioned. once copied you have to rename the movie for
the psp to reconize it..... M4VC0001.MP4 this will be your first movie
M4VC0002.MP4 would be your second and so on. that's it!
    4. another tip if you want to create a THM, which is a thumbnail icon
in the actuall psp, open your movie on your computer and pause at
a good scene copy the still open it in preview or another viewer and
rename it to the corresponding movie for movie M4VC0001.MP4 the
THM would be M4VC0001.THM drag this into the same folder as the
movie. now you have a little thumbnail when selecting your movies.

i hope this was helpfull to at least one person, if not i am just proud of my accomplishment. now i realized you don't even need iPSP or PSPware to get movies, pictures, songs or your saved game data to and from your mac. when you format the memory stick in your psp it makes folders for you to just drag and drop your pics. mp3's. although for movies you have to follow above. a little trickier but it's worth it. good luck

Its beyond me why this thing, which is sexy as hell, doesnt come with a MF appropriate USB cable for computer hookup -- since this is one of the selling points, that you can connect it to your Mac.

Clearly Sony products are not thought through completely like Apple products. However, I still bought one, strictly for its video capabilities, because if Apple doesnt feel people want to watch video on iPods, I'm glad Sony disagreed.

What video resolution(s) are available using:

    a) iPSP?
    b) ffmpeg?

And, is there an option to output 480 x 272 video (PSP native screen resolution)?

    iPSP-320x240 Hack(Auto Screen)
    FFmpegX-320x240

Sony made it so you cant play anything bigger than 320x240 off the memory stick. Probably because it would lag in reading speeds.

PSPWare encodes 16:9 content at 368x208. It probably couldnt hurt to try a 480x272 encode. So far, these encodes arent coming close to anything like the quality on the Spider-Man 2 UMD movie. Is it that h264 is THAT much superior?

I tried ffmpeg 0.0.9s to make an mp4 file.

The audio played back fine, but the video was sped up by a factor of 7 so that the video finished playing after 0:15 on a 1:45 clip!

I tried PSPWare demo, and liked it but the quality of transcodes werent what I hoped for .. also finished videos would sometimes fail to sync to PSP (and in failing to do so, would delete everything already in the video directory on the PSP).

I tried ffmpegX to transcode content. I felt liberated in being able to tweak settings. Quality of encodes improved, but, given the freedom to tweak, I overdid it and spent more time reencoding things rather than enjoying them on the PSP. ffmpegX lets you adjust the title of clips, the metadata that shows up on the PSP. A bonus!

I tried iPSP last. I initially didnt want to try any software from this dude after the whole 42 drama. However, it is the best of the bunch. Encodes are as clear as the source, and you can tweak quality via a slider bar and it shows a predicted output size which is fantastic. It only failed once on a high definition transport stream, but to be honest, its failed in other programs, too .. I must have done something bad to it. In addition to being able to tag a title to the clips, you can choose your own thumbnail image to accompany the clip onto the PSP. It even encoded muxed MPEG2 content with MPEG audio, something ffmpegX would not.

Has anyone had success encoding and transferring a mpeg-2 (AVSEQ.mpg file) files to the psp. I have tried both FFMPEG and iPSP and get errors with both programs.

Try opening this SVCD file in MPEG Streamclip (make sure you have successfully extracted the file from the disc and onto your hard drive). Save it as a headed MPEG file then try iPSP to convert it.

Mac OS X doesnt natively support SVCD so you cant transcode it directly from disc.
