i'm trying to edit old home videos by capturing the vhs into an authoring program. i've got pinnacle studio 9 quickstart, tmpgenc dvd author, and windows movie maker, but none of them seem to be able to do what i want, which is to isolate different sounds from the synchronous audio track (planes taking off while someone is talking, etc.) and edit them out. pinnacle offers an upgrade at a whopping $50 that includes an equalizer, but i'm not sure if that would do it or not, and it seems like a lot for what i would imagine is a basic feature people would want. am i missing something obvious?

First of all - $50 is not a "whopping" sum in this field (or hobby to you) If you don't have lots of money to keep spending on this endeavor, you may as well forget it.

In fact, today's computer based editing systems are absolutely remarkable - enabling users to do things in post production that 13 years ago required a $200,000 edit suite - no exaggeration.

Go to the HOW TO's in this forum and you will get all you need to know to get started properly.

I recommend the Sony Movie Studio package ($100) for editing video and DVD burning. A free trial dowload is available on SONY's website. The trial won't burn a DVD but it will output to DV tape or allow you to create an MPEG or other completed program output file on your hard drive.

PS IMO, Windows Movie Maker is simply a waste of time.
