Might not be "real" Taiyo Yuden discs (i.e., fakes) or might not be the "super duper" Taiyo Yuden discs that we expect and demand (i.e., sub-par status discs).

Only way to be safe is to buy from RIMA.COM or Major Brand Labels that use Taiyo Yuden (such as FUJI packages that say MADE IN JAPAN).

This was covered in another thread but I don't have the link handy.

  4. I've NEVER seen any retailer selling fake TY media coded discs that actually CLAIMED and ADVERTISED the discs as being Taiyo Yuden. The only fake TY media coded discs I've ever heard of were sold under generic brand names such as 'Sonic' and 'GQ' and 'Matrix, etc.

These are probably just the same discs as the 'value discs' that have been sold for similar prices through other online retailers in the past month or so, there's been several other posts here lately on the discs.

P.S. - it doesn't look like you'll get free shipping, so even with the coupon they will still be around $30 shipped, in line with the prices that these discs having been selling for lately. Not that it isn't a great price...

This is what I meant when I had said "super duper" Taiyo Yuden discs that we expect and demand (i.e., sub-par status discs) in my post above.

Not worth it if you ask me.

A 50-pack of FUJI DVD-R discs is on sale at BEST BUY this week for $19.99 and when I was there a few days ago all the packs they had (roughly one dozen or so) were MADE IN JAPAN aka Taiyo Yuden. This sale is good through the end of the day this Saturday which is 03/18/2005

    Otherwise get them from RIMA.COM

Not worth "messing" around with MEDIA as you will just run into problems either now or down the road.

  6. They are TY discs. I've had problems with a few of them, but for the price they're not bad. The NEC 3500 will burn them at 8x with factory firmware. They burn at 4x sometimes instead of 8x, not too often though. I've noticed that the Fuji TY discs that I have stored on spindles are getting little spots all over the outside edge of the discs, I think it's from the rough tops of the discs and no stacking ring. I have hundreds of other DVDs and none of them look like the Fujis. I won't be buying anymore of them.

  7. rima... SuperMedia Store is bad ..not the worst..that is Meritline. Don't trust them! your call will go nowhere. however, i just buy the made in Japan Maxell's when on sale locally. But if you can't wait for a sale rima is the best online seller for ANYTHING I have ever dealt with. SMS is is in the lower 10%, -stay away.

I noticed that too on the recent 50 pack of Fuji MiJ's I bought during this sale. Will this affect the burn quality/longevity?

If it was due to no stacking ring, it would affect all TY discs since no TY disc I've ever seen had a top stack ring. However they have a stack ring on the dye side that should keep the discs from touching each other. Who knows what causes the spots on the outside of the Fuji TY discs. It doesn't seem to be thru the whole spindle of TYG02 I got recently though.

  12. I think it's the tops of the fuji discs. The TYs I got shrink wrapped with smooth tops don't look like that. I've got hundreds of Prodiscs without a stacking ring stored on spindles, and none of them look like the Fujis do.

  13. I just wanted to add it was (so far) only with the recent 50pack I got. The Fuji's I got from a sale a few weeks ago are fine. They are packaged the same. Who knows.
