  1. I am using the film machine to convert an AVI to a dvd format for burning. I am using the CCE trial enoder set to 2 pass

Half way through encoding I recieve this error. (pictured bleow) I am wondering if it is a problem with ..
    The source AVI
    The Encoder itself
    Encoder settings
    Or Codec issue.
This is about the 4th time I have tryed running this through and I thought I would run it by you guys here before I wasted another 3+ hours waiting for it to error.
I've Divfix scanned and found no errors.
I am unsure as to how to check for errors with Virtual Dub. (if someone could enlighten me I'd appreciate it)
I've also scoured the forums and searched for my answers, but had no luck
    Your help is much appreciated

I generally use VD Mod. In that program, load your vid file, and it should tell you if there are some problems immediately. Then go to 'Video' and 'scan video stream for errors'. Not guaranteed that it will find all of them, but it does pretty well. If you have errors, you can generally do a direct stream copy. If that fails and you have a DIVX or XVID, you can re-encode the file, as long as you have the codecs, and try that file with TheFilmMachine.

  5. I hadan't heard of VD MOD I'll have to take a look with that program and give it a shot. I loaded it up in Vdub, and I do see that it is a scene with alotofflash bulbls going off, as reporters are taking pics, perhaps CCE thinks it is a video stream problem.. I'll load up VD mod and give it a try..

Major thanks, now I have some direction and ideas.

i dont have tmpgenc, but ill download that and givethat a shot if quenc can't encode it..

BTW hows the quality of Quenc compared to 2pass CCE?

I hope I didn't confuse you. I mean VirtualDub Mod. I use that mostly instead of the regular VirtualDub for AVIs and DIVX and XVID, and MPEG conversion to AVI. It's a good tool for AVI type files.

Most versions of VirtualDub are essentially the same, but some of the tools are arranged differently. I haven't used TheFilmMachine for a while, but my version can't use TMPGEnc, though it is a good encoder. Quenc is OK, not as good as TMPGEnc or CCE, but it's free. CCE works very well with TFM, but it costs a little.

If your video has VDR MP3 audio, that can cause a lot of problems. Not sure how TFM handles it. I usually separate VDR audio with VirtualDub and save the audio as a WAV. Then I encode the video and add the audio to the encode using TMPGEnc.

TheFilmMachine has the common fault of many all-in-ones in that it's easy to use, but not too flexible with odd formats. It is quick and easy, though.

When you get a little more experience or want to fine tune the quality, you might look into doing the encodes with something like TMPGEnc, then using a separate author program like TMPGEnc DVD Author. There are other similar programs that will do this too.

Anyway, it's a learning experience, don't get too frustrated.

  7. redwudz,
Wow I have to thank you big time for your detailed response, I really didn't expect to get that much info.

After a search I found you were talking about VirtualDub Mod.. I downloaded , and tinkered a bit,but just coudln't figure it out. After re-reading your post it looks like you gave me detailed directions on how top scan

I decided I would give Quenc a shot, and what do you know.. it encoded fine, although like you said the quality is somewhat lacking.

I have CCE SP trial version.. every run through it gave me that error, usually on the second pass. Even after a run through DivFix.

Could it be that TFM is feeding CEE SP trial A command that is disabled in th trial version?.. Maybe I should check and see exactly what is limited in the trial version.

Now that my DVD is encoded It's a matter of curiosity, and determination. I HAVE to know why CCE won't encode this AVI, but Quenc encodes without a hitch. Anything I am missing? or any other suggestions?

Thanks again for the detailed response, it's really appreciated. I must have spent a month reading here at the forums, and haven't actually interacted with the members until now.
