'Star Wars' was on TV last week and 'Empire Strikes Back' will be on TV tonight.

I did have the 4:3 version on the videotape and recently also got the DVD Trilogy having 16:9 widescreen as meant to be from the theater.

On TV last week, I was quite disappointed to view it as not real proper theater widescreen even though as widescreen on digital TV as I can see.

It isn’t as wide as the DVD version and true 16:9 viewing does make the difference even on my standard 4:3 TV as letterboxed.

I can see all as 16:9 and the TV showing of the movie was still cut on the sides a little.

I am looking forward to seeing 'Empire Strikes Back' on TV tonight.

Anyway, the best is all on the DVD and long live the DVD.

I think that what you are describing is the "effect" of TV OVERSCAN where a standard TV will mask, or cover, the extreme edges of the image. This includes top, bottom, left, right.

However when you view a DVD on a computer you see the extreme edges since a computer monitor does not have OVERSCAN as does a normal standard TV.

To better illustrate what I said above:

On a computer monitor you would see:

On a standard TV you would see:

This is due to TV OVERSCAN.

Some examples from 'Poltergeist'. The white area is the frame extracted for the p/s version. You can see how dramatically the presentation of the film is destroyed.

That's right and looks closer on a 4:3 LTBX on TV than the DVD of the film.

That photo above is the accurate description of what I've seen on TV last week.

    Thanks
