When converting DV files into SVCD's, when should joining and special effects be done? From reading many detailed accounts of procedures it seems that most of these tasks should be done with mpeg files. Is this true? Can someone help me see the big picture?

  2. It should be done before you encode to Mpeg. Mpeg is kinda the final format,DV is Better for editing.

But it seems that it is much easier to join files in mpeg than AVI...I have often tried to join files using Virtualdub only to be told that their formats were incompatible even though they were made by the same camera within hours of each other in the same place.

Try using an NLE instead of virtualdub. Most allow you to mix and match footage from pretty much any source, and you are less likely to get audio sync problems. Even WMM2 will do this better than virtualdub.

I use virtualdub for many things, but I use Vegas for editing all the time.
