  1. I have a bunch of karaoke DVDs. I only like a few songs from each. I would like to rip the songs I like and then make a custom Karaoke DVD.
I thought that each song would have its own VOB however this is not the case. I have seen one VOB representing several songs. Any thoughts? Your help is appreciated.

Convert the DVD back to MPEG 2. Chop and edit the songs you want and then reauthor the DVD. What programs do you have or what are you familiar with?

Dont convert it back to MPG because you will not turn on and off vocal . You will end up with no singer at all or the singer keep singing and you can not sing alone .
Use Intervideo DVD Platinum to do it, it also have another method, I forget , will check and let you know
    Cheers,

Check your karaoke DVDs and test the audio streams first. Play the tracks/songs that you like and press the audio/language button to see how many tracks they have. You could use a software to do this too.

Most karaoke DVD's have at least 2 ac3/dts streams. First stream could be 3/2 ac3/dts or 3/0 ac3/dts with lfe and the vocal is on the centre channel. The second stream could be 3/2 or 2/0 ac3/dts stream without voice.

Now to make "proper" DVDs you would need an authoring software that supports two audio streams. DVD-PRO is great for this job and is worth it for $199.

Since you already have Ulead VS7, go to edit mode and select import DVD, go to your DVD volume. A window will pop up showing the tracks on the DVD. Select only the ones you like. Then still on edit mode, put in the second DVD karaoke in your drive then select import DVD and select the tracks you want. Depending on the length of the songs and the number of audio streams, you can put as many as 25-50 songs on a DVD. If the original audio streams are dts, then you will not be able to put as many tracks/songs.

Ulead VS7 does not support ac3 audio AFAIK, you can not use VS7 to actually compile a new karaoke DVD, but after importing the DVD's you can go to Ulead import folder and find the tracks/MPEGS that have been selected. Those MPEGS are in this file name format UV#######.mpg.

Use DVD-Lab PRO (an evaluation version is available) to import these .mpgs. DVD-Lab PRO will demux the video and two audio streams for each mpeg. You can then use the video (.mv2) and two audio streams (.ac3's) as assets for each track of your new karaoke DVD's.
