  1. I'm trying to use GoldWave to reduce the hiss/hum of an SVCD, but when I load the mpg it says: "Cannot determine file format" and asks me to select from a dropdown list. But, i dunno which one to pick. Also, can I just open the .bin file with GoldWave, or do i have to extract the mpg first?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to extract the mpg first before you open it with goldwave. Also dont crosspost with the same question, keep it in the same thread.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

K, but the main question was what do I select for the file format? It gives me a list of raw sound formats like PCM signed 8-bit little endian, etc etc. I have no idea what to choose.

Well for File Type it gives me 2 choices 1) Raw (snd, raw) or 2) Dialogic (vox). For attributes it has PCM signed 16 bit, little endian, stereo...and all kinds of variations in the bits, stereo/mono, etc. And finally there's Rate (Hz) and by default it's set to 8000.

Can you be a little more specific on what I should select? And is this always the same for an SVCD, doesn't it vary based on how it was encoded?

In a different thread someone told me I should first extract the audio, then run that through Goldwave and then merge it back. But then in other forums I've seen people say they ran the actual avi file or mpg directly into GoldWave. So I'm confused.

  6. Open the avi in goldwave.
    Select Effect, Filter, Noise Reduction.
In the little dropdown box, select Hiss Remove.
    Click OK.
    Wait a few seconds.
Click File, Save as, .wav, signed 16 bit PCM.
Now you can do whatever you want with the .wav to make a new SVCD (or whatever).

It's not an avi, it's the MPG (AVSEQ01.MPG) that I pulled from the mounted .bin of the SVCD. When I open it up in Goldwave, it immediately pops up a window prompting me for the file format info I mentioned above. I know how to do the noise reduction etc after I get it opened. My whole problem is when I first open it, and also I do not think it's automatically pulling the audio from the file...because I selected a random PCM file format, did my noise modifications, and then did Save As, and the file was no longer playable.

Demux the mpg into an m2v and an mp2 using TMPGEnc Plus or TMPGEnc MPEG Editor, then open just the audio mp2 file in GoldWave. GW will recognise that perfectly alright and not ask you any other stupid questions.
