Here's a general question for all dvd recorders with a hard drive. While recording on your hard disc, can you pause during commericials? I'm used to my pioneer 210, I record basketball games and sit there and pause during commercials. I want to upgarde to hard drive recorder. Obviously if I'm not home, and recording is set to tuner, I will have to edit out commercials. However, if I'm home, can I pause during hard drive recording? Please advise.

I'm very sad I missed out on the costco $249 for the pioneer dvr-420h-s.... I cannot believe I missed out on that. I was in China at the time!!!

Also, is it correct to assume that any dvd recorder with a hard drive that is supported with BASIC TIVO, means that you cannot edit out commercials? So far from my understanding, hard drives without TIVO such as pioneer and panasonic, you can edit out commercials.

    Thanx!

Of course you can pause recordings to the hard drive. I believe your last paragraph is also correct.

I used to "pause-out" commercials in the VCR days. In fact, if I paused too late, I would cue-up the exact place to restart if my VCR had flying erase heads to enable a clean cut. Unfortunately, I remember ruining several recordings by missing the end of the commercial break or being late in doing so.

I have never even been tempted to do so on my hard drive DVD-recorders. It is just so much easier for me (and pretty precise) to record the program entirely and edit when making the DVD copy. Plus, I don't have to be nervous about missing the start of the program when the commercial ends.

  4. If you dont want commercials, get commercial advance. Tricky to find on a dvd recorder tho.
