I am looking for a cheap small DVD player (same size as Cyberhome 300) that plays DVD+VR, since the Cyberhome 300 that I was using in my bedroom, due to its size, does NOT play DVD+VR.
I have more than enough DVD players, so this player would just be to be for the bedroom which only has a shelf large enough for a player the size of the Cyberhome 300 (I want to keep the room looking the way it is, so I don't want a bigger shelf or bigger dvd player).
Thanks!

Mac Mini? I had no idea what DVD VR was before this post, but the only DVD player thta supported DVD VR was a wide looking Sony. I bet a Mac Mini would fit the bill though.

Thanks!
I just realized that I forgot to put one of my two requirements in my original post, sorry:
Since I already have enough DVD players, this one should be (very) cheap; it will just be to use in the bedroom where I want it to fit on the small shelf under the small TV, so that everything matches and so that the bedroom stays a bedroom. -
Actually, if anyone has a list of players (small or large) that play DVD+VR, I would appreciate it.
Thanks! -
is there a difference between dvd-vr & dvd+vr?
the pioneer dv-270 plays dvd-vr's.. $60 at wal-mart

I was surprised to find that my Cyberhome 300 did not play the vr disks created by my ILO.recorder. All of my other players would play theVRs even the old players. I could not find a way on the ILO to finalize the + rw disks so I ran the disks thru my PC with either shrink or Decrypter, don't remember which, but within the space of 15 min I had the stuff from the VR copied over to a new +rw disk that would play in my cyberhome. hope this helps.

DVD+VR is DVD-Video compliant. Your problem is probably disc related, not format related.

Thanks for the info LordSmurf.
I will try the +VR discs on my other home DVD players tonight.
The ILO that cal_tony mentioned is based on a Lite-On design, and other owners had the same problem with that ILO/Lite-On recorders + Cyberhome 300 combination, even though the discs play on other DVD players.
Maybe the Cyberhome doesn't fully support the DVD Video standard (with respect to +VRI mean).
Maybe there is a firmware update for the Cyberhome 300? (I got mine a long time ago)
I downloaded and burned the firmware update (firmware posted Nov. 15 2004) for my Lite-On LVW-5007, but I am curious what is new.
The DVD+VR discs show up on the Cyberhome screen as two folders VIDEO_TS and VIDEO_?? (forgot what the last two characters have).
The VIDEO_?? folder contains a video file (judging by the movie camera icon) with a _RM extension.
I click on them and it looks like it is about to play and then stops in less than a second.
This happened with multiple +VR discs.
I guess the test will be trying the discs on my other home DVD players, other than the recorder of course. -
Well, -VR format applies to -R discs and +VR to +R discs.Originally Posted by lumis

I tested the DVD+VR disc created in the LVW-5007 DVD recorder in my other DVD players.
The results:
Cyberhome CH-DVD300 : does NOT play
Pioneer DV-563A: does NOT play
Sony DVP-CX985V: plays fine
Norcent DP-501M (aka Lite-On LV-2001): plays fine
and of course it plays fine on the DVD recorder
So 2 of my 4 DVD players play the disc, which I find interesting because it isn't clear cut one way or the other now.
I would have expected the Pioneer DV-563A to play the disc. -
As mentioned in another post of mine, 2 of my 4 DVD players do play it and two don't, so it doesn't appear to be the disc.Originally Posted by lordsmurf
The two players that don't play DVD+VR play just about everything else (one plays MP3 DVDs; the other plays SACD and DVD-Audio; they both play VCD, SVCD and MP3 CDs. They both recognize CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW.
I found a post here that states that compatibility with stand-alone players is much lower with DVD-VR and DVD+VR than with standard / regular DVD Video format. -
my cyberhome 300 plays my Ilo/liteon recorded dvd+vr recorded dvds perfectly, better than any of the other dvd players in my house even.

Maybe it depends on the model of the DVD recorder (I have the 5007) then or on the version of the firmware (I just updated the firmware yesterday afternoon).Originally Posted by solidsnake
Which model is your DVD recorder?
I'll record a TV show now that it has the new firmware and see if it makes any difference.
Do the discs' contentsy show up on your 300 as TWO folders (VIDEO_TS and VIDEO_RM?) or one or?
Thanks! -
I have an ILO dvdr04, and a Liteon lvw-5005. Both units I recorded dvds before installing any firmware, and it worked on my cyberhome 300. I then upgraded the firmware on both recorders, and all my recordings thereafter have worked perfectly. They start up just like any other dvd, with the menu with the thumbnailed titles showing up. I just bought my cyberhome 300 this past Christmas, maybe I have a newer version or something.Originally Posted by VEFF

Thanks a lot for the info!Originally Posted by solidsnake
I bought my 300 about 1 1/2 years ago I believe, so yours may indeed be a newer version.
I am now wondering if I should get a DiVX enabled player (seen one for $34 after rebate) and use that in my bedroom. The trick will be fitting it. on the shelf though, since i don't want to change anything in that room.
Oh well, time to make a decision.
Update:
There are, apparently, at least SIX different bersions of the 300, with very different performance and even different on-screen menus etc.
That is according to a post I just found at another popular site... -
You might try the Sensory Science player they sell at Ultimate for around $30. I took some discs that wouldn't work in anything I had to Ultimate and it played discs almost everything else wouldn't. It's about the size of Cyberhome.

Thanks for the tip.Originally Posted by samijubal
I'll look into that one.
I am also potentially considering a couple of DiVX-capable players so as to kill two birds with one stone so to speak.
If they aren't too deep, they might be okay (in terms of size) for the shelf; I'll just let the player overhang a bit (hopefully just a bit) on both sides.
I'll do some measurements today.
PS: The LVW-5007 firmware update didn't make a difference in terms of DVD+VR capability at least, so it is definitely the Cyberhome 300S.
Mine was manufactured in March 2003 or so... -
Where can you get one that cheap? I would buy one if I knew where.Originally Posted by VEFF

are you happy with your cyberhome 300? I am, I think it was worth the 30 bucks I purchased it for, I mostly use it for mp3s, vcds, dvd dubbing, and audio cds. I have a better dvd player for playing my commercial dvds, but my cyberhome is good enough for the price, IMO. I think Wal-mart has it for 34.99 everyday low price, but best buy always has the 300 on sale, with rebates of some sort.
