    http://www.foredu.com/speed_up/

    The app is at http://www.foredu.com/download/!xspeed-setup.exe

The Pro Version is at http://coda.nctu.edu.tw/ftp/Vendors/pub/slime/systemUtilities/!xSpeedPro-setup.exe

I have no idea how it works, but it does reduce my encoding time quite a bit -

I've been testing it out for two days now, and it hasn't crashed my system, although obviously, YMMV.

It's pretty impressive, and I'm a skeptic when it comes to these kinds of apps.

    * Note - Activate the Speed Up only while you perform the CPU intensive task, like Mpeg encoding, or Vdub with a bunch of plugins *

Try it with a VirtualDub job and see if it works for you.

  2. How does it work? I do not believe the claims they are making, but if you say it works... I'm interested!

    Any ideas?

It messes with the clock, somehow. It's a little weird, and I wouldn't run it unless I was encoding. The trial allows you to increase the speed by a small amount for testing; the full version allows a big increase.

Here's a clue (I guess). When I turn up the throttle, the emoticons on the left side of the screen (when you reply to a post) animate much faster, as if their frame rate has increased.

I'll do some actual benchmark tests just to ensure it isn't an illusion (that the system APPEARS to be running faster because data is being sent to the screen quicker).

Anyway, I'll post the results later today or tomorrow.

  4. Messes with the clock? As in the clock speed of your CPU? If so, that's not a good thing. Firstly, it voids the warranty. Secondly, I bet it doesn't monitor temperatures effectively. No way can it overclock a system on-the-fly like that - too many variables.

As for a 256 fold increase in system performance, I struggle to gain 20% extra with an overclock that took days to perfect...

Anyway, I'm looking forward to your results!

  5. It may only affect bus, not cpu clocking, which would account for the increase in video speed.

since when have u been worried about voiding a warranty?

  7. Me? Warranty?

I make a point of burning it when I get a new bit of kit. Just concerned about other, more timid folk!

    Well Guys, I Was WRONG

When I got down to actual benchmarks (TMPGenc, VirtualDub) the numbers ended up the same.

I think this app merely increases FPS on the video card. Might be good for a gamer, but matters little for waiting out an MPEG2 encode.

It sure LOOKS like your PC is running faster, but in reality, your senses are being fooled.

It actually smooths out HD playback, but the A/V plays WAY out of sync.

Oh well. I knew it was too good to be true. (Places size 11 foot in mouth)

  12. There's only one way I know of to increase your speed, and that is to overclock your hardware. Good, solid, tangible results.
