Just curious, but does it really matter which drive (DVD-ROM or DVD-RW) is on which connector of the IDE cable, as long as one drive is set to Master and the other set to Slave? Mine are connected opposite of what you said and things seem to work fine -- or am I losing data speed and don't know it?Originally Posted by glockjs

no issues with ME relating to the DVDr drive.
Ok i got the 6 XP boot discs. I got to disc3 and got error code 7 which is 'halacpi.dll could not load' so after searching microsoft said to hit F7at the beginning so i did. It got past that now i get error code 4105 which is setupreg.hiv error. I cant find any info on this. any ideas? I think it might be bettter and easier just to put ME back on there. -

Don't even bother to format, just REMOVE all partition(s) in fdisk, then shutdown.
Plug in the first of the 6 floppies, and restart.
You will get prompted to make a partition, and format it, and then start the install from CD.
This is providing your Dell meets the minimum requirements for XP, otherwise it won't install. I forget just how old you said this machine is...Cheers, Jim

p3 - 733mhz, 384mb ram. Hell i install this XP disc on a 200mhz machine and it ran fine.

really pissed now. Used my win98 boot disc and used FDISK to format to fat32. Rebooted and stuck in XP boot disc 1. GOt to disk 3 and got the same setupreg.hiv error. What the heck do i do now?

does the xp disc have sp2?
PhenII 955@3.74 - GA-790XTA-UD4 AM3 - 2x4 Corsair Vengeance@1600 - Radeon 5770 - Corsair 550VX - OCZ Agility 3 90GB WD BLACK 1TB - LiteOn 24x - Win 8 Preview - Logi G110+G500 -
that sucks. i was gonna say microsoft gives live chat support if you have sp2 but they wont talk to u if you have anything else
-
what if i would copy the setupreg.hiv file to a floppy then transfer it to my HD. Then run the XP boot discs? I dont understand, i used these discs to put XP on another machine and it worked fine with out any issues.
-
ok heres the issue. The XP pro disc i was using is a copy and must have some corrupt files. I also have a XPhome disc. It shows the 'boot from cd'when the computer boots up. So all along the dang disc were messed up BUT i used those discs to install XP Pro a while back so not sure how it can work on 1 computer and not another. Well ME is going back on there.
-
Nah, shove XP hope on it, and then upgrade to Pro with the other disk. (if you really NEED pro for anything).
Even a poorly working version of XP is FAR better than a perfect working version of ME
Edit: Nah, I'll leave my Freduian slip where it isCheers, Jim

now the only problem is that my Sound blaster live 24bit sound card doesnt have sound. -
Why in gawd's name did you get SP2?
SP1 is plenty, especially for video work. SP2 nicely messes up a lot of stuff (well, it CAN).
At least your formatted it to NTFS, which rid you of all the ME junk.Cheers, Jim

I havent had any problems with SP2. I put it on my laptop as soon as it came out. No issues.
-
I read MS is going to force everyone to use SP2 around mid April. At least Pro users.
