Just curious, but does it really matter which drive (DVD-ROM or DVD-RW) is on which connector of the IDE cable, as long as one drive is set to Master and the other set to Slave? Mine are connected opposite of what you said and things seem to work fine -- or am I losing data speed and don't know it?

Most dvd burners are picky and want to be the master on the cable or it will not work properly.

no issues with ME relating to the DVDr drive.

Ok i got the 6 XP boot discs. I got to disc3 and got error code 7 which is 'halacpi.dll could not load' so after searching microsoft said to hit F7at the beginning so i did. It got past that now i get error code 4105 which is setupreg.hiv error. I cant find any info on this. any ideas? I think it might be bettter and easier just to put ME back on there.

This has to do with the ramdrive that you did not need to create.

Use the dos boot disk and run fdisk and delete the partition.

Then use the six boot floppy's.

  8. Don't even bother to format, just REMOVE all partition(s) in fdisk, then shutdown.
Plug in the first of the 6 floppies, and restart.
You will get prompted to make a partition, and format it, and then start the install from CD.

This is providing your Dell meets the minimum requirements for XP, otherwise it won't install. I forget just how old you said this machine is...

You are supposed to set up a fat32 partition first.

ok heres the issue. The XP pro disc i was using is a copy and must have some corrupt files. I also have a XPhome disc. It shows the 'boot from cd'when the computer boots up. So all along the dang disc were messed up BUT i used those discs to install XP Pro a while back so not sure how it can work on 1 computer and not another. Well ME is going back on there.

  21. Nah, shove XP hope on it, and then upgrade to Pro with the other disk. (if you really NEED pro for anything).
Even a poorly working version of XP is FAR better than a perfect working version of ME

Edit: Nah, I'll leave my Freduian slip where it is

That would be fine but make sure you activate the pro version.

for the love of god, i got it installed. I actually installed ME back on there and stuck in the Pro disc. Went into the I386 folder and clicked the winnt32 file. it went thru the setup process and asked to format the fat32 part. to NFTS. Got it all done and added sp2.

now the only problem is that my Sound blaster live 24bit sound card doesnt have sound.

  27. Why in gawd's name did you get SP2?
SP1 is plenty, especially for video work. SP2 nicely messes up a lot of stuff (well, it CAN).
At least your formatted it to NTFS, which rid you of all the ME junk.

  29. I read MS is going to force everyone to use SP2 around mid April. At least Pro users.
