  1. Hello. Not sure if this is the right forum for this topic but I will throw it out there and see what happens.

I am looking to buy a new system and wondered how much RAM is sufficent for video rendering? Basically I am looking at a system that is 2.8 GHZ and I can go with either 512MB DDR2 RAM or 1G DDR2 RAM. I am sure that 1G is better than 512 but is it going to make THAT much of a difference when rendering and burning a DVD? If it is only going to be a subtle difference, it may not be worth the extra $$$ for the memory.

IMO, you are correct. You probably wouldn't see any difference in 'rendering' speed between 512MB and 1024MB of RAM. 1 Gig is useful for some high end graphics programs and might help with multitasking. (Which you really shouldn't do while you are encoding anyway)

Add it later if you need the cash to get a better system now.

  3. Gaming, however, often requires 1GB of RAM to play smoothly. I had trouble with UT2004 and 512MB of RAM.

What else will this machine be used for, aside from video encoding?

It won't be used for much gaming. Mainly everyday use such as internet use and book keeping. Nothing that would need high end performance.
