  1. I'm new to all this, so forgive me if this sounds like a dumb question, but i'm asking anyway...

I'm trying to convert a TV episode (roughly 45 mins of video) to AVI to be conveted to MPG (for VCD) or directly to MPG. I successfully ripped the VOB from the DVD, and can watch it with DivX Player and a few other programs as a VOB file.

The problem comes when i try to convert it to AVI. Right now, the plan is to convert from VOB to AVI, and then from AVI to MPG. The thing is... i can't seem to get it right. I've used DVD2AVI, and it takes about 35 minutes and seems to be converting it. It creates an AVI file, but it won't play.

So... what am i doing wrong? I've searched the site, and can't seem to find the answer (which doesn't mean it's not there ) If there's a way to convert VOB directly to MPG or VCD, that's fine as well, but i'd settle for AVI...

Do you mean captured directly to MPG??

It creates an AVI file, but it won't play.

    Open ended question:
What decompressor are you using with DVD2AVI, and what .AVI editor are u using for playback?? What's the message??

    Suggestion:
Load the .VOB in VirtualDubMpeg, uncompress both Video and Audio.
Reencode both video and audio for your final output..

    Good luck!!

  3. Why are you Going From MPG to AVI to MPG?
Just RIP and BURN with DVD Decrypter.

You are starting with a DVD and you want to burn to a DVD?

  4. Load your MPG file into Tmpgenc "FREE for MPG 1" select VCD Tamplate, encoed and burn with Nero or any other Program for VCD.

  5. Okay... i've got the video encoded via DVDx, but the audio doesn't sync up. Any suggestions?

  7. You are unnecessarily taking a longer route. Why ??

As already indicated by Canadateck, encode your mpeg file to VCD compliant using TMPGEnc or MainConcept and burn with VCDEasy or Nero or any other s/w of your choice.

  8. Okay... like i said, i'm new to all of this. Dispite the fact that i've been registered here since 2002, i've never really been a regular, so i'm not exactly... up to speed . This is the first time i've ever tried this...

You say i'm taking a longer route than is required; how? What i have is a VOB file, ripped from a DVD. I want to fit this video onto a single 80 min CD-R VCD. To my knowledge, and yes, my knowledge is very limited here, so i could be wrong, TMPGEnc doesn't do straight conversions from VOB to MPEG... at least not the version i have. If i'm missing something here, and it can be done, then great! Please tell me what im missing.

So far, the only program i've had ANY luck with is DVDx, which gave me an MPEG file, but the audio was out of sync. Anyway... i very likely am doing this all wrong, which is why i'm posting here. What i basically have is a VOB file ripped from a DVD, and a blank 80 min CD-R to fit it on. What is the easiest way to handle this?

DVD2AVI. Start it File->Open. Load first vob, it will load the rest automatically. File-> Save Project(NOT Save avi!!). It will create d2v file.
Load d2v file in TMPG. Encode.
If the movie duration is up to 80 min it can fit as standart VCD on 1 CD-R. If it is more - it cannot (too big)

  10. Yeah... i tried that. For some reason, it sayd the dv2 file is unsupported. I've got all the codecs installed that it says i should need, but still...

It'll let me add the dv2 file if i'm not using the wizard, but it will only encode the audio.

  11. This is a very easy way, Rip with DVD Decrypter to Elementary Streams "One Video" and "One Audio" file, and use those in Tmpgenc or Rip into one Video file and then De-Mux Video and Audio, and use that in TMPGENC.

I think TMPG will not accept MPEG files as video source.

Hmm, as I already respond to the other thread use DVD2AVI 1.76. With it I haven't any problems. Hopefuly vfapi is registered to TMPG.

Just tried with mpeg2 capture - "File"C:\bla-bla\bla.mpg" can not open or unsupported"
d2v file from the same mpeg2 opens just fine.

You need to fix somthing then. Take a look at the Sticky common TMPGENc problems.

  16. Ah-ha it needs MPEG2Plugin. So I was right - natively it can not open mpeg files. BTW this plugin is not included in the package, so...
Other than that using the appropriate plugin you can open everything in... everything

  17. You need the Mpeg2 Pluging to encode TO Mpges2,Like I said above Mpg1 encoding is free.

You wouldnt even Be able to Play MPG2 without a MPG2/Player codec.

  19. Code:
To convert from MPEG2/SVCD/DVD videos you may need the MPEG2 Plugin or a MPEG2 Codec/Player.
This is from link you gave for TMPG problems. It is written quite clearly "to convert FROM..." It is not "to convert TO" as you stated

  20. What is your Point anyway>?

Use TMpgenc Convert TO and FROM MPG2,That's it,I'm not going to Debate these Minor things with you.

You Need MPG2 Codec any way you Look at it.

You Said it doesnt Encode TO or From.. What ever it was you said...It Does..End of story.

  21. My point is that natively with built-in plugins TMPG cannot accept mpeg files as video source. That's it.

  22. TMPGEnc does take MPEG files as input. See the screenshot from TMPGEnc website.

tmpgenc plus supports mpeg2 input not tmpgenc....

  24. Well... my problem is fixed. I used DGIndex to create the .dv2 file instead of DVD2AVI and it worked fine.

Actually, I use tmpgenc (not plus) and edit mpeg-2 regularly. I went and tested it just now to make sure..

If you can't open the mpeg2 file, check the vfapi priorities and maybe open the mpeg2 with another player (powerdvd came with my writer) to 'kick-start' the codec - I sometimes had to do this in the past with AVIs... gl
