  1. I searched the boards for an answer but was unable to find what I was looking for. I own a PS2 and roughly 25 games. My little brother and I share it, but he is too young to realize that things cost money I guess. He has destroyed 4 of my games so far. I try to keep the ones he's not playing away from him, but sometimes I forget. So I want to backup the games I have now before he breaks anymore. However, I play everyday. I don't want to #1=pay $150 to have a mod chip soldered in, #2 Have to use those damn fliptop CD things EVERY time I play or #3 live without the PS2 for more then a day. Yes, I have issues. Anyway, I have a friend who owns an Xbox and he found a way to backup his games and play them without any special modifications. I was just wondering if there is something like that for us way cooler PS2 owners?

No. None whatsoever. Well, there is the MOD chip that plugs into your USB port, but it's a pain in the arse - boot from their special CD, open the drive, put in a game with a high TOC (like FFX or Devil May Cry), open the drive again, put in the copied game). Might be worth your while.

    Search for "no solder mod".

The chip studmonkey was referring to is the DMS4 EZI chip, and come in both lite and pro versions.....it doesnt require soldering but you do have to place the clips in the correct places on the MB, and it has to be done right, or else it wont work.

Another alternate would be to get a hard drive and network adapter for the PS2 (you need the NA to connect the HD with) and install your original games to that and run your games from there. Of course this will only work if you have a PS2 console other than the V12, which you cannot install a HD.

I have a HD installed on my PS2 and I love it.....games run much faster and greatly reduced load times (esp for games like DBZ Budokai 2 and 3 and other load time-hogging games).

You can do a search on the HD system if you wish, but if you get the EZI chip, if you dont know how to install it yourself you wont have a choice but to pay someone to install it for you, and do it right and not have a fried PS2 from improper installation. Hope this helps.

  5. HD =$80
    Network adapter= $50
    Hdloader= $40
    = $170 & Only certain games work.

Usb thingy is called an sbox or a neokey & you must solder one wire & do a GS swap.

You can use the knife trick, this has been around 7 years but requires a swap disk.

Depends on your version ps2 which we don't know, so I don't want to keep guessing at what would work for you.

That xbox thing is a tsop mod & the ps2 isn't an xbox, whew.

    Yep!!
I just use a flip top shell with the boot disc, cheapest way to go and has always worked great for me 8) that extra 20 seconds to swap the boot disc after loading is a real killer though

depending on how many games you want on the hdd, you can get away with a much smaller hdd.. most people dont need more than a 40gb hdd.. $40 or less.. network adaptor is $37 at walmart.. and if you've got a ps2 below v11, you can run hdloader off the memory card by booting it with a psx game.

$77 isnt too bad.. its even better if you already have a network adaptor and you have an extra hdd laying around, and you can boot hdloader of the memory card.. then its practically free.

Modding can be done for less than $150 and I think its well worth the price of at least 3 games if you ever loose break or damage at least 3 games the whole time period you own your ps2.
Its a free country and its your ps2 and you can do with it as you wish though

You cant play the ps2 games withou at least buying a fliptop with swap disks or a modified memory card with a fliptop minimum.

Also the usb modchip still required one wire to solder and you couldnt use it to play dvd backups and the solderless DMS3 has been causing some problems with the clip not making great connections and misaliging and some ps2s wont work right them

Some reliable chips can cost $20 or less and some people install for less than $70 nothing like having a well soldered in chip but differnt strokes for differnt folks I say.
