I use Smartripper, then DVD2AVI, then TMPGEnc to create backups of my DVD's but I lose any subtitles. I need clarification on the directions I am trying to follow at this link, http://forums.lite.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/808
Movie is, Passion of the Christ

    1. What does the statement, " after you've created the d2v file with AVI.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2AVI, use VFAPIConvert (from VFAPI Reader codec package) to convert the d2v to pseudo-AVI." mean?
I do not see anything in Smartripper concerning AVI.cmf, class="forum_link or the rest of that line. I have VFAPI Reader.

    2. If possible, please leave me more detailed instructions or let me know where a better manual is. Thank You![/b]

  4. Hi-

What's your intended output format? VCD, like in that thread you linked? AVI, SVCD? If you don't know, or don't know what I'm talking about, then it's time to do some reading.

If AVI, then I'd recommend using AutoGK, and then just select the subs in the subs window, before doing the encoding. There are many guides already on this site (just look to your left, under the green "HOW TO"), and I certainly wouldn't follow that one at Afterdawn. And I certainly wouldn't recommend making VCD.

I strip the VOB files with Smartripper, then use DVD2AVI which creates a WAV sound file and a D2V video file. I then use TMPGEnc to create an MPEG file by reading in the WAV & D2V files. I then burn MPEG onto a CD-r using Nero.

Smartripper is used to strip off the Subtitles but I don't know what to do from that point on. The procedure on Afterdawn is the closet I have found for the software I am using. I will follow up the Autogk though, thanks!

I'm just curious, but with DVD burners easily available for under $60 and blank DVDs available under 40 cents, why would anyone in the US still be using VCD?

I tried the AutoGK and it did create an AVI file with the subtitles, but with no sound. Not really what I am looking for but thanks for your help Manono!

Bobk, your comment was no help at all!

If anyone reading this knows of a way to create the file with sound and sub-titles in an MPEG format your help would be greatly appreciated.

  8. That was the question - what is your aim? VCD or SVCD? VCD can have only permanent subtitles, while SVCD can have selectable subtitles and the approach will be different. So until you don't say us what you need we cannot guide you to the right direction

It wasn't a comment, it was a question (that's what a question mark at the end of the question is meant to indicate). It wasn't intended to be helpful, it was intended to solicit an answer.

  11. To answer your question: should be read
    Code:
after you've created the d2v file with DVD2AVI, use VFAPIConvert (from VFAPI Reader codec package) to convert the d2v to pseudo-AVI
Thie is needed because VirtualDub cannot open d2v files.
If you have VFAPI Reader Codec than you should have VFAPI Converter. I never used it but it will "wrap" the d2v file as an Pseudo-avi. For all applications that can read avi files it will appear as a real avi file.
My personal advice: use DVD2SVCD to create a VCD with permanent sublitles. It is relatively easy and almost one-click approach.

Then try answering my original question. I am looking for answers on how to accomplish something using the format I have chosen, not questions on why I don't change. Please stop wasting my time. I am trying to learn. I am glad there are still helpful people like Baldrick, Manono, & Abond! To them and all the rest who are helpful, I say Thank You!

I apologize. I didn't realize this was your personal board for only you to get your questions answered. Guess the rest of us should start a new board where other people can also ask questions and get answers.

But here's an answer to your original question- quit using VCDs and start using DVDs. Problem solved.

  15. Hi-

I tried the AutoGK and it did create an AVI file with the subtitles, but with no sound.

You didn't seem to like the AVI. I guess you want something that'll play on your DVD player, and your's doesn't play AVI. For future reference, though, I expect that the AVI does have audio. You can open the AVI in GSpot to confirm. If it does have audio, but you can't hear any, then I would also guess that it's AC3, and that you haven't yet installed the AC3 Filter.

I'm with Abond in recommending DVD2SVCD to create your VCD. And if you want something that looks better, with higher resolution, then I would use the same program to create an SVCD. There are plenty of guides at this site and at Doom9 for its use. It's easy. After setting it up, and then using it a couple of times with a good guide in front of you, you'll be able to use it with your eyes closed, so-to-speak.

Thanks Abond & manono, I am trying DVD2SVCD but have run into problems when it starts my TMPGEnc. I had an older version and downloaded the newer one but still not working. Now even trying my old method TMPGEnc will not read the D2V video file, error="can not open or unsupported".

  17. hey guys, i'm in the same boat with the subs, only that my file is an avi, in a diffrent language, i have a sub thats in english as a .sub file. Now i just thaught of somthing, and i need an opinion on if it might work or not? I was thinking that i will use tmpg to demux the audio, and then remux it with the sub file. will this work? or maybe i will have to convert the .sub file to wav first, before i can remux it. any opinions?

I got the TMPGEnc problem fixed by coping in the Dvd2avi.vfp from DVD2SVCD. I don't know what happened but it is now working. I havn't had time to try the DVD2SVCD, maybe this weekend. Thanks again everyone for all your help!

I did get my backup created in a crazy way. I used the AVI file the AutoGK created, ran it through TMPGEnc with the sound file that DVD2SVCD created. This worked but I plan on learning and using DVD2SVCD. So again, I really can't say it enough, Thank You!!!
