Is it OK to ask if members would have a particular DVD cover scan they can e-mail to me? I'm not sure if this would be considered warez or not.

Seeing as how that this is the issue that shut down DVDCOVERART.COM ... I'm going to have to say "no" and it's not allowed.

But since you asked for the big man, I'll let him give the final answer.

  3. DVDCOVERART.COM was a real Scam, there was great covers, But you had to upload to get credits or buy them,Thats fine, but they said the reason was because of server Cost/Bandwith, they could have let the uploaders serve from theyr site if they had one,and not charge you if that's where you downloaded the cover from,But they wouldnt allow that,I wounder why..$$$$$ , glad to see they were shut down, they made money off of the movie companys AND the People that spent hours making those custom cover..

Then technically ..linking to sites that have them would not be allowed?

My thought on this is that this is not a DVD cover/etc trading site. Not really "warez" but disallowed just the same. So linking to another site is probably fine.

Just a segeway to this topic. Bouchercon (named after author, editor & critic, Anthony Boucher) is the largest convention in the world solely devoted to mystery literature. It's in its 36th year. And, for years (but not every year), one of the "Anthony" awards given out is for "best cover art" among nominated novels. Links to covers of novels (many, full-sized) were given so voters could determine the nominees and, eventually, the winner.

It's always puzzled me that publishers LOVE (and even encourage) full-sized graphics of their book covers online, even if there's no award associated with it, because it's just one more form of publicity. But for some reason, CD covers (and DVD covers) online send chills up the spines of media publishers. Heck, if there's a pirate out there who really wanted a full-sized cover, a quick trip to a rental store plus a good scanner and printer would do the trick. It's not as if taking down a "covers" website would stop piracy.

    Oh well ...

P.S. The first time Bouchercon ever had a website was in 1994. I was the webmaster (ahem ahem) ... and I'm the webmaster of this year's Bouchercon site (Bouchercon.net) as well.

I think it's just ridiculous personally.

Shutting down a web site like that will not stop piracy. What the MPAA, RIAA, and whoever else are doing is fruitless. It's like trying to empty an ocean with a teaspoon — you could work at it forever, and it'll still have no effect.

I think publishers actually have the right idea: by allowing covers on web sites, and even sample pages, they are allowing readers, more than ever before, to make an informed decision about what they'd like to purchase; but DVD producers are still stuck in the dark ages.

  9. Yeah, but a cover of a book is useless. What are you gonna do, print the whole book on your inkjet? Even if you download the e-book, it has no attachment to the cover.

BUT, a person could Napster/Kazaa/whatever a whole CD, DL the cover, and make his own CD. Not as good IMO due to MP3 quality, but in many opinions basically equivalent, and no $18 cost.

Same with movies, particularly with Netflix, Blockbuster, etc. out there.

IMO, the MPAA's reasoning makes sense.

Like I said, real pirates would either rent a DVD from a store that gives you the original box (some do, especially mom/pop stores too cheap to buy the plain plastic cases) or just buy the DVD and copy both content and cover. And creative pirates would design their own covers if one wasn't available (like on a film never released on DVD). Example:

Only "hobbyists" who probably aren't major threats to the MPAA would use a downloaded image.

Actually, what I need are just a couple of the "scene selection" inserts, not the covers... but it sounds like that may be not allowed?
BTW, I did check at cdcovers.cc and they didn't have what I need, so that is what prompted me to ask the question here.

This would be useful on a commercial DVD without a printed cover bought or having a DVD cover as damaged.

The ‘Basic Instinct’ legitimate commercial DVD I got doesn’t have a proper printed DVD cover and a beautiful cover would be great on this one.
