  1. I have tried capturing video from my Sony Handycam with both Windows Movie Maker, and Premier Pro 1.0. Movie Maker usually freezes up my computer, and causes it to reboot on it's own. However, when I am able to capture video using Movie Make, the files are relatively small. When I use Premier, a clip of a few minutes in length can be several GB in size, where as the same file captured in Movie Maker might only be a couple hundred MB. Does anybody know of any way to get better compression out of Premier?

  2. Please forgive me for not knowing my camcorders, but I will have to assume that this is an analog one and NOT DV. DV filesizes should be very consistent. I've never used Premier, but you need to look for some kind of compression codec. It sounds like you're capturing in RGB with no compression.

Where to start, OK let's go

    1. define your computer by processor, memory and make-model.
    2. Sony DCR-HC20 uses DV format. Did you buy this camera for its video quality or is VHS good enough for your needs?
    3. are you using IEEE-1394 for transfer?
    4. what do you intend to do with the video after transfer?
