I need to be to send composite video (normal TV stuff) over a local LAN and then at other end display it on a monitor (quality does not matter). It is to check that "TV channels" are on remotely from a desktop. It is for a commercial application but the budget is Radio Shack region! Any ideas?
Sorry of wrong forum but I hoped someone on VideoHelp.com could help.

I think you are looking for something like this

or like this

Thanks but it is more complicated. It has to run over the existing LAN infrastructure, IE not just over CAT5 but over an IP network.

It looks as if it would be the ideal client because it takes UDP/RTP streams. But what box will take my TV signal and convert it to UDP and or RTP streams? Thanks

Thanks, after following links Etc. research so far is:
We want to go COMPOSITE TV SIGNAL ---> ROUTER ---> LAN ---> CLIENT
It would seem that we maybe able to do this with free MS Media Encoder http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx
Also maybe
http://www.umediaserver.net/ but seems a bit overkill but is free.
A high performance solution costing I guess ~4500Euros is http://www.exterity.co.uk/
Also appears Sony offers a solution:

And of interest a video client that looks good is :

Now that i know what you need, you might want to try one of these units.

I'm now guessing that using MS Media Encoder http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx at one end connected to PC with TV card with composite in (which card?) will do, with Media Player at other end of LAN for remote viewing.

A solution that will work is http://www.vcs.com/english/produkte/hardware/vip1000.shtml which is around 1000euros for the two boxes (one at each end).
But before I decide on these I am going to see if Windows Media Encoder + PC+TV card at one end and Windows Media Player at the other end will work as it has the advantage of displaying on the PC desktop. -

Glad to be of help. Having a part time business of installing security cameras you get alot of weird requests from customers. I have landed several jobs that other (big name) security companies said were impossible to due. All it took was a little research, a lot of reading, and a whole lot of "I sure hope this thing works the way I want it to work".

So MikeV have you used this product? If so what client did you have running to receive the video from it? I emailed the company but I am awaiting a reply.

I have not used one of these yet. The one customer that thought about using one decided to use a 4 channel DVR with removable hard drive instead. He has fired two employees and another is under investigation. He liked the idea of the local hard drive instead of going across phone lines and recording remotely with his office computer.
