I am looking for a TV solution to replace the "crappy" software that ATI includes. (not so much crappy in ability as it is in functionality but that is another topic altogether). I am currently using my computer as a dedicated media center, using freebie myHTPC as the front-end. I am looking for a TV software that will allow TV-on-screen viewing of TV schedule w/record-now/schedule record function, and also would be nice to have TIVO like features to record multiple shows with built-in schedule-conflict-resolution. real-time pause/rewind/fast-forward would be nice but not critical.

myHTPC is not the most glamorous front-end but ut works well for me and I have several plug-ins added to it. The myHTPC TV plugins work well enough for the scheduler but I cant get it to record using the ATI card. I have looked at replacing it with Beyond-TV (it wouldnt even install on my computer), SageTV (TV wouldnt function properly), ShowShifter (which I do like though the interface is too simplistic), and a few others but nothing has replaced the myHTPC front-end yet. AT this time I am just looking for the TV solution piece and not a all-in one replacement solution.

    what I need:
    - On-TV-Screen TV Schedule (needs to be VERY readable on TV screen)
    - search feature (by title, genre, etc)
    - ability to record-now and schedule recordings
    - TV-Schedule MUST be built in and not fed by solution such as TitanTV
    - I am able to gather xmltv data so that could be schedule source
    - would like to have TIVO-like ability (always record favorites, schedule conflict resolution, etc)
    - MUST work with ATI-9800 (no hardware encoding)
    - pause/rewind/fast-forward would be ice but not required

If I could just get a TV-scheduler software that is TV-friendly and that would be able to "feed" the MMC for the TV-card I would be happy with that.

  2. AVI_IO?
    GB-PVR?
    GotTV?
    IUVcr?
I don't know if those will work with that card, but I think they all support xmltv.

Sounds like your computer has other issues, that if not resolved will not allow any program to work properly. Beyond TV user for well over two years now. Run a Win PVR MCE (Dual TV Tuners) and record two channels at once. In order to set up a good media center you have to have a good and reliable platform. Reformat, re-install everything and see if that doesn't solve any issues, otherwise you may never be satisfied.

The computer itself isnt a problem, it is the support for the non-hardware-based ATI-9800 encoding (ie SAGE and a few others dont support it), and the lack of an interface that I am satisfied with and that has the features I want and integrates well with what I already have running.

The other programs I tested worked for the most part, I just wasnt happy with them. As for BeyondTV - it just would not install and the BeyondTV support were unable to provide any resolution. problem 1, the install would not detect the internet conection, and yet I downloaded the install from their site using the internet on the same computer, I have SEVERAL varied processes running that access the internet successfully, and I was also able to connect to their site via a browser using a HTTPS link they provided me for testing. problem 2, the btvwebserver.exe service would not start propely and would generate errors every 30seconds, and this after I "turned off" every other process and then re-started the PC with ALL other startup processes disabled. Admittedly there must be some conflict buried deeply between something on my PC and their program but if they cant even detect the internet that downloaded them I dont want to bother searching for a ghost.

ANYWAYS I dont to turn this thread into a different direction on why the BeyondTV install failed, just interested in alternate suggestions for HTPC TV-Scheduling software

also, I really do appreciate the examples above, however the 'vcr' programs are desktop-based, I am looking for a 'GUI' process that will run on my TV screen
