  1. I'm getting the sony PSP soon and it can play MPEG-4 files. is AVI a MPEG-4? or do I have to convert it?

    AVI is a file format or container as it is often called.

    An AVI file can be a variety of formats which include but not limited to MPEG-4 (such as DivX or XviD), DV (like the kind that digital camcorders use), HuffyUV, PICVideo MJPEG etc.

    Most AVI files that you download from the internet are MPEG-4 be it DivX or XviD.

    If by mpeg4 it means mp4 container, then you would have to remux, also re-encode the audio if it isn't mp3 or aac. Also there are probably also resolution and other constraints.
